Am I crazy? Completely different backsplash ideas from my prev.

I think I want to go a completely different direction than I originally thought with my backsplash.

I was thinking a neutral glass or ceramic.

Now, Dh and I both think we want either a colored subway tile or a solid talavera type tile.

Also, I saw one of my finished doors today, and the color is darker and more variegated than originally planned.

To recap:

My granite Yellow Jaguar

Range and hood are stainless. Other appliances are white and will stay.

One option I like are the Seaside Ceramic Subways. I like all the colors, but especially Desert, Topaz and Spice. It would be all one color field tiles with a few decorative tiles here and there. Or maybe just a simple liner.

If I were to go with Talavera, it would be a similar colors, golds, yellows, etc. I don't care much for blue, but would look at some greens.

Mexican tile colors

Any of those colors would work with the rest of my home. The paint color for the kitchen has yet to be decided and the colors on the room adjacent to the kitchen are fairly neutral.

OH... I really think the light rust in the Mexican Hand Made tiles would look marvelous with your beautiful granite! LOOK!

Gorgeous granite choice! I too like the light rust, as it brings out the pattern of grey in the granite. I wonder, though, if a cooler colour for the tile (like a pale grey) would allow the warmth from the granite, the cabinets and the floors to show thru (so that the overall effect of being very warm is reduced)?

You don't "need" a wet tile cutter but it certainly makes the process go much faster. With those mitered cuts, where they'll be butting up to each other, and out in the field of the tile, wet saw will be the ONLY way to cut that tile. Otherwise you WILL end up with rough cuts. As for whether you're crazy for trying this or not, think about this-- there's a younbg lady who alot of the "old timers" in here know as Pirula (Ivette). She and her husband put their own master bathroom together, including a Kerdi steam shower. it comes down to one of my favorite cliches-- "Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you're probably right." It's mainly a matter of confidence. I can help you through it, and so can the other pros over at John's forum. It's up to you. From what I've seen so far, it looks like you've got a pretty good jump on it, though!

didn't have time to read all the answers. I have no backsplash and have never regretted it...been over 6 yrs. It is painted with BM matte...which has ceramic in it. It is as beautiful now as it was when first painted. I love the fact that I can showcase other things ...art etc in my kitchen and no competition. Also if I ever want to change it is as quick as a paint brush...expense is minimal..paint only ! All in all I think it is serene as you point out . Here is one pick. Since I have a lot of high heat cooking in my kitchen..built in deep fat fryer as well as gas cook top I can definitely speak to the longevity of paint only. c ( more at this album )

Hi, I've always loved that style of pottery--it's lovely! Have you considered a honed slate? We really liked the Andhra Blue--there is variation in the colors, but a bit more subtle than the picture above. The colors range from grayish-blues to grayish greens. It looks good with a dark grout, and has a very natural look. There are some pics on this website of a few different slates/quartzites available. As for backsplashes, I'm in the same boat. We're using the slate in our bathrooms with a white pebble border/backsplash. Don't think pebbles would work in the kitchen. Maybe a combo of metal and different shades of blue glass tiles? (to pick up on the different blues you have between your pottery and cobalt glass) Good luck--it is truly overwhelming, because there are so many beautiful things out there to choose! My sink has a bar behind it with no back splash and I am going insane.

Thank you all, last night when I was handling the dishes you see in the strainer I realized I do need a much deeper sink. I never really paid attention to it but things like that red salad bowl or the glass pan have far too much air space when they're in the sink. The part to the left of the sink would bother me more had it not been a perfect spot for the strainer to go (that way we aren't moving dirty dishes over the clean dishes to get to the open half of the sink) and surprisingly it doesn't spill much on that side even if we do use the faucet over there. Luckily there's plenty of room to the right of the sink for placing larger dishes that need to be washed.

I thought about a pale grey as well. I have a really hard time with the warm color, cool color concept. I like the rust, or a similar light color.

This is roughly the look I'm thinking about. With something different behind the range.

I like those three tiles, I'll have to think about that.

I went out and about today. If your local tile shops sell tiles like this, Talavery or otherwise, they don't carry any samples. But, I could find any kind of stone, or stone look tile you could possibly want.

Maybe I am crazy for wanting color.

I think that your instincts are excellent! I like the inspiration pic - I forgot that grout lines can add a bit of 'cooler' tones. Good idea with something behind the stove. Maybe something raised, like the cord style in the pic. I also like laying the solid colour tile in a brick pattern. Gives the sense of a pattern without adding another colour. I'd avoid too many colours in the tile, so as to not compete with your counters.
