Not a problem. No one will notice.

Even though it's an open-concept, considering the layout of your family room, the kitchen exists in the corner and the island does not need to be centered. Once the two spaces or integrated with color, texture and light, you will appreciate the overall space and not even notice what you consider to be off center.

Morgan, yes my home is open concept. In the remodel we actually shifted the range over a few inches so it isn't centered on the island. By doing that the KD placed two symmetrical cabs on either side of the hood, but caused asymmetry with the island. The back splash and custom hood will be the center of attention and no one will notice the asymmetry of the "boring" island cabinets in front of that!

Although open, your kitchen is its own area and does not have to be aligned to the family room.

It's fine the way it is. Once completed, you'll never notice.

Symmetry is overrated.

I agree with kim k. Ignoring the fireplace for a moment, the left edge of your island lines up perfectly with the left edge of your kitchen wall and it works.

Don't worry about it! I say that despite being obsessive about symmetry and always attempt to accomplish it. Symmetry is fine if it does not add incovenience or impedes movement around living and kitchen areas.

On a related note - I'm not sure I would even center the fireplace. There are some great asymmetrical fireplace walls that actually leave you a place for a TV (assuming you want a TV in there).

If you're having the tv atop the mantle do what I'm doing and get a Mantle Mount for the tv.

Regarding symmetry, it's overrated. For example, my fireplace isn't centered with the wall and dividers leading into my kitchen. In fact my ceiling fixture and lights are centered on the fireplace and not the overall space of the room and it looks right. Here's the plans of the room. Notice how the dividers between kitchen and living room are centered but the fireplace isn't?

That's because on paper you're looking at all elements at once but in reality, you are not looking at the beam, the island, the fireplace, etc all at once. In fact, nothing in my kitchen is symmetrical (except the cooktop between the two windows) and no one would look at my kitchen and say it's wrong because it's not symmetrical.
