Can I use a Hercules Sink Harness to support a 80 lb drop in sink?

I want to install a 27" Kohler Riverby drop in cast iron sink into an IKEA 30" sink base with a pullout for trash bins. It weighs 80 pounds. Home Depot says I should support it with boards up the sides attached to a a support board underneath the sink. It looks like this will interfere with the pull out. Could I use a sink harness instead? The counter top will be Corian.

I would use boards for the support if your cabinet and sink will allow. You will actually get more room under the sink using boards for supports. I think it is stronger than using a harness. You can see the vertical supports holding the horizontal support I used for my sink in this picture.

We're comparing apples to oranges. Cinclips are a fine product and will be a best value to the lesser-skilled DIYer who will gladly trade ease of installation for a bit more money. For a production fabricator, it isn't even close. The significantly lower cost of the HUSH and Sink Strap (7x's less) combined with the speed that comes from experience of repeated installations, make them a better value for that buyer. As a general rule, production fabricators don't shop and review on Amazon for common supplies, unlike a homeowner with a failed sink to repair.

I am still figuring this out too, but here's what I know. I tried to find reputable granite fab people, and all three companies I had bid it insisted on a bracket system rather than gluing the sink to the granite with epoxy. Yes, your wood strips are acting as a bracketing system, and I was told this is an acceptable method. If it's tripping you out, remember that wood supports are what's holding up the rest of your granite countertops and hopefully your contractor knows his way around proper support. Are your particular wood strips are sturdy enough? My guess is you are good to go, but I can't tell you that definitively. I also don't know about the clips or the seam. Try calling Blanco tomorrow with these questions, and if you could post back their answers, I'd appreciate it too!

Hi Joseph....I was hoping you'd respond! :). I'm an avid fan of yours (blush). We prefer an undermount sink because it's easier to wipe counters off onto the sink and as well because the emphasis will be on the countertop (Cristallo quartzite with gold and copper veining). The only reason we are considering a top mount (which we have now) is because it's easier to replace the sink (hubby might be able to do himself), should it need to be replaced in the future. I'm a bit of an OCD when it comes to the house/kitchen looking pristine all the time (and I both cook and bake A LOT). We are having a difficult time deciding on what sink (Brand, etc.) and color to get. White is out of the question as it's too intrusive next to our stone. Hubby wants a copper (my original idea), but two factors for us to consider is: We have hard water, and heard that may spot the sink, and also PRICE. Paying 2-3K for a sink is out of the question (financially) for us. We are stomped! Our kitchen cabinets are honey maple, our island (in works right now) will be a creamy white color, and then we have the Cristallo quartzite.

I disagree that the unwashed masses would not notice that a sink is not undermount. If the neighborhood warrants quartz counters, a significant percentage of prospective buyers would notice it and find it not as appealing as undermount. Before I knew anything about kitchen trends, I knew that I hated wiping down a counter with a sink that was not undermount. But as Sophie wrote, renovating to sell within a short period of time is probably not a financial jackpot absent unusual circumstances or ones’s ability to remodel at significantly more savings than the average person. I had friends who did high end remodels but they were both realtors who scoured their market for undervalued homes in upscale neighborhoods and essentially had a crew of people that they kept busy so there were no surprises in terms of attempting to find labor or spending endless time researching the best prices and of course they were contractors for their projects and got the benefit of those kinds of discounts.

wacokid, since my cabinets are frameless, with this solution I will not be able to use the under cabinet drawer for my waste bins. I would also prefer to not see boards if I don't have to. The harness I plan to use is rated for cast iron. Since my sink is a drop in sink that does not have an apron it won't require the same amount of support.

Yes, my sink is very heavy. The harness should work fine. The HD guy was not "misinformed" as the above poster said. There are different ways of doing things. Good luck...

Strap systems, Hercules Universal Sink Harness and Sink Strap, are incompatible with drop-in sinks, because they push the sink upward. That's desirable for an undermount, not for a drop-in.

After confirming that the top is supported by strip underlayment between the cabinet tops and the bottom of the top around the sink base cabinet perimeter, run a bead of caulk around the top at the sink perimeter, drop in the sink, Windex the squeeze-out, wipe it away and you're done.
