Please help decorate my freshly painted master bedroom

I have just finished changing the colour of my bedroom walls and ceiling and I am ready to add some finishing touches. Could any of you design gurus help me with window covering, art for the walls (over the dresser or bed) or any other suggestions...

Suggestions for decorating my master bedroom
Comments (21)I tried the bed with two side tables at an angle, but it didn't really work. Something about the distance between the large window and wall, and the width of the bed just didn't work. I could never get the angle to where it felt comfortable to look at. It also left a huge gap in the triangular area between the headboard and walls. It caused the trunk to be just a few feet from the entrance and the pathway from the entrance into the bathroom seemed cramped and awkward. So, it will have to be near where it is now. But I'm intrigued with the suggestion that I could move the bed over to where it was partially under the window. I have been diligently trying to keep it perfectly centered between the small window and the wall, even though that means I don't get a table. Because I thought that was what one should do. I would love to have a bedside table on my side. What you don't see is a foot stool providing storage for my chapstick, water, reading material, and extra pair of socks in case my feet get cold. And shutters??!! For the love of cabbage, people, I absolutely adore shutters, but didn't think they would work in that room. Shutters!! I also found a rug in Pottery barn that combines a version of the warm reds and yellows with the cooler blues and greens. I think this color mix will work, but it needs to be the right shades. http://www.potterybarn.com/products/brant-rug/?pkey=cpersian-style-rug-shop Also, if you will turn with me to p.152 of your January 2011 Pottery Barn catalog that offers Comfortable Style and a whites sale, you will see a photo of pillows at the bottom left of the page. I'm liking these colors and thinking of them with lots of neutrals. I'm warming up to the idea of the cottage look with lots of whites/neutrals, but still not sure about white slipcovers and all the white. It seems like it could look like a bunch of ghosts live here and left their outfits laying around the house. Maybe I need to look at more pictures. Also, on the all white with one color thing...is it one color for the whole house or does each room get a different color? And how would you avoid people from referring to different rooms as the "Red" room or the "Yellow" room or the "Blue" room? Two other questions... Given all the doors, which I am beginning to accept must be painted or replaced (Painting furniture made from hardwoods makes me sad, but I now see that I can't leave them as they are) would some type of wainscoting be too much action for this room? This is my grandmother's iron bed that is in an upstairs guest room. Would it be a candidate for our room, or do I need wood? Or possibly something upholstered? The iron bed does accept a standard mattress, you just have to beat and shoehorn it in there. The footboard is the same, but, of course shorter. It's brass-colored with the paint flaking off and will need to be repainted. Comments (6)The most economical solution would be to bite the bullet and paint the desk from your teenage bedroom set that you are using as a vanity. Then ditch the teenage dresser and move the vanity. The shelves in your towers are currently being under utilized and you say you need storage for folded clothes. I would put curtains on the glass with top and bottom rods and use the shelves for the folded clothing. If the only reason the black curtain is there is to hide the cords, I would remove it and fill the area with wicker baskets that have covers. This will hide the cords and offer more storage. Paint the purple shelf black. Since you say you are willing to budget some money for improving the looks and function of the room I think you would be happier if you just got rid of the teenage furniture altogether. Sell it on CL. Then get a second hand secretary desk that looks more grown up and use it for a vanity. Get one that has a hutch to fill the wall space and you can use the cubbies for storage too. One that sits on legs would look light and airy in the room, but if storage is an issue, get one with drawers below. The flip down work surface would stay up most of the time so as not to crowd the room. These secretary pieces can be found on CL for cheap. You will feel more like a princess doing your routine at one of these than at you old teenage desk. If you sell the desk and dresser, and get a secretary the cost might be a wash. If you are planning on painting the secretary black anyway, you can even get a scuffed up one for very little money. Then with a secretary painted black being used as a vanity on the wall, and all the other furniture black, I think you could leave the two towers as they are as the economical option. You don't want everything to be all black do you? You just want to not have a myriad of wood tones and treatments. Your idea to get an entertainment amoire is nice. I think that a TV hidden behind doors is more peaceful for a bedroom and would look better being less cluttery. An amoire would have a smaller footprint in the room and also give that wall some breathing space. They are cuter too and you could find one that looks very feminine. Again, CL to the rescue. Buying a clothing amoire and adding a shelf inside for a TV, will give you style options that are more suited for a bedroom than a rec room. They are usually on feet and a big bulky thing like an amoire in a smaller room needs feet to make it seem lighter. There are some nice entertainment amoires made for LR TVs and they can be found on CL for a song. A nice secretary as a vanity? ===================== An amoire for TV and clothing? Comments (135)omg, I just got so happy with my bedroom and today the demo on the adjoining master bath began and it has all gone to hell so fast! I know it will all be worth it but holy cow, what an ungodly mess. The DUST, the dust!! I'm going to head out and buy five--ten more of those huge thin plastic drop cloths tomorrow first thing just to protect furniture in other rooms from all the dust. I doubt I could make those shades, but perhaps I will try... my mom is visiting this week and she is an absolute genius with a sewing machine. Comments (6)Lovely furniture! I am assuming the walls are just painted, no paper or other decorative technique on them. While you don't really need anything there, you seem to feel it is calling for something. I would think about finding a pair of paintings or photo portraits that could be hung in oval frames. I think it would compliment the oval design on the headboard, and have the same period feel as the furniture....See Moredecofran

I have a couple of lamps in another room of the house and I have added a photo so that you can tell me if I am heading in the right direction. For the rug, does it have to be a particular size?

Take that bench and place it at the foot of your bed.
The lamp size is much better. Seeing those lamps you may want to consider doing mirrors behind them instead of a mirror near the dresser. Something like this.

6 years agoWhat color are your walls? Depending on that I would keep your shades white or linen since your color scheme is linen and white. Some options. Not married to these color wise or other but just throwing ideas out there.
