master closet/bath questions

MASTER CLOSET QUESTION:

Walls are framed and I am re-thinking a couple of things and would appreciate opinions. We currently have 8" sun tunnels planned in the "hallway" to the master BR and one in the master closet. We could put a window in the master, even a small one, instead of the sun tunnel. Could move sun tunnel to the master bath? Also, in looking at the "hallway" now, I am not even sure we really need one there. We originally had the closet door more toward the bottom of the pic, but moved it to create more open wall space as suggested here. I am not crazy about the current door location now, but not sure that an entry out in the hallway would be any more preferable.

MASTER BATH QUESTION:

In seeing it framed up, the space between the corner shower wall and corner of the toilet closet is tighter (but not too tight) than we pictured it would be. One thought was to make the one toilet closet wall just a half wall instead of all the way up since there isn't a door there anyway. Dumb idea?

I avoid penetrations in roofs. I would go with 30-36" high wall extending 48" from the wall to make the room feel and be more open.

If it were me and I could still reframe a few things, I'd close in the closet into the bedroom and do the following.

I would move the door to the bedroom down where shown. This then makes the hallway there private and part of the master bedroom.

I'd then remove the closet door into the bedroom, and move it into the redone hallway. This gets it out of the middle of the bedroom and it brings the door closer to the bathroom door too. It gives you a longer wall to put furniture on, a tv or???

Additionally, by reconfiguring the hallway so it's actually part of the bedroom, automatically removes the need for a solar tube in the hallways since now the hallway will get light from the bedroom window.

As for a solar tube or window in the master closet? Nah. Just put good lighting in.

As for the wall for the master bath, make it a frosted glass wall.

Our master bath is 6x13'. This is large enough for the toilet, a tall 18" wide linen closet, two 36" vanities with two 36" mirrored medicine cabs & overhead sconces, a 42" neo-angle shower, and an 18" wide 3-drawer storage chest. The latter is on one of the "short legs" of the rectangle as there was a structural beam in the way that prevented us from expanding that shower into a nicer 3x5' rectangle. This gives us an almost obscene amount of storage, even for packrats like us! I actually have empty drawers, which for me is shocking. So depending on how much you want to cram into your master bath, you will probably have a decent amount of closet space available. Good luck!

My closet is off the Mbath without a door, (I haven't had any issues with mold, dampness, ect. but we've only been in for 6 months.) I love it! As far as a hamper, I built a pass through hamper in the middle of the wall that opens on the other side in my laundry room. I do somewhat miss having storage on the back of the door, as I've always hung DH's ties and belts on a over the door system. But that being said if it was me I'd take the door off. They make some cute corner hampers too if that would fit .

Olychick - the painter was DH :) He painted both rooms at the same time and used 1 can for the first coat and 1 can as the second coat, so I know it's the same color. 1929Spanish - I think it is the different light and exposure. The bathroom gets limited southern light from a window in the toilet room and the closet gets more direct northern light. Plus the warm gray paint probably looks more ivory against the cooler gray carrara. I actually love pale gray and creamy ivory together so I'm not really complaining - I'm just really surprised how different the same paint color looks in these side by side rooms. This is the house we are selling. The master was the last project in our 16 year remodeling adventure with this house :) We bought a fixer upper farmhouse in Tennessee so that's next after we sell and move. I do like this bathroom though - wish we had done it sooner. Maybe I'll do the same master bathroom in the Tennessee house!

I'm with Enduring in that I would prefer the space given to the closet instead of the toilet. In the last house, the toilet in the master was crammed into a tiny space shared with a tub/shower combo. Really, really disliked the space. Would traipse down the hall and use the other toilet. (I used the shower in the master only one time in all of the seven years that we lived in that house.) Also, I would not put a tub in but that may be just me. (The house already has one tub.) I would much rather clean a shower once every six weeks or so (we squeegee after a shower) than have to clean the tub (bent over and on your knees) every single time it is used. Tubs use a lot of water vs the lo-flo shower heads. But, if you love tub baths and routinely use a tub to bathe, that's another story and you'll want to include it in the remodel. (If you're thinking a cast iron tub, the floor framing will probably need to be beefed up.) Not a huge deal since the ceiling below will likely be torn out anyway for the plbg. changes. The other thing I see as a problem is the door opening directly in front of the vanity. That is going to be a pain if this is a shared bath and someone else is standing in front of the vanity.

Thanks, guys....great ideas!! Would it be advisable to put the 2 solar tubes into another place (since we already have them in our quote)? Maybe interior guest bath that has no window? Or 2 in the master bath? I want really good lighting in there (although it does have 2 nice-sized windows already.....

Put one in the interior guest bath but frankly, I'd ask for the credit back because there will be other things including paying for the change order to change the master closet and hallway. ;)
