I always thought that would be on my list of no-no's, but we lived in a condo just before where we live now that had the closet off the bathroom, and I found it really convenient. We never closed the door to the closet, and nothing got musty or moldy (good fan in the bathroom I guess). We didn't have to close it for guests because it was in the master bedroom, so we just closed that door, or, if we thought someone would go in the master bedroom, then we just closed the bathroom door.

In our FL house, our master closet is through our bath. We never close the door. We have a laundry basket in the back corner of the closet.

Do not remove the door to the closet. Get a free standing attractive hamper and place it somewhere else.

in our previous house we had the closet through our bathroom. I closed the door just because I thought it kePT the clothes less dusty ( I dont know if it did not) but we had a laundry basket sitting on the floor between the built in dresser and the hanging clothes portion. Worked well for us.

Is there room in the bathroom to change the swing of the door so that it opens into the bathroom instead of the closet?

You could do what my brother did - he installed brackets so that he could hang his laundry basket on the door and then he added an oversize mailbox slot above it so that you could just push your laundry through the slot.

Lucky you, for having a walk in closet. We had two closets side by side that we opened up and customized with shelving, rods etc. I have laundry bags on the floor of the closet. I haven't used a hamper for years. I have 4 bags. One for darks, one for lights/delicates, one for whites and one for blacks. Clothing goes into these bags and when it looks like enough for a load, I bring it downstairs. No need to sort through dirty clothing.

My walk in is off the MBath and I find it very convenient. No musty odor, but then it's only myself that showers, so no buildup of steam, and the ceiling is higher also, which may help. The door swings out into the bathroom, which seems more logical to me. If you have space in the bath, have someone rehang the door as that would make the most sense.

I have a good size linen closet and keep a basket on the floor for 'the dirties'. Again, it's just me so it never gets filled over the top. ;)

I too thought we wouldn't like our closet off the bath, but we love it. Our former house had the closet just to the left of the door inside the bedroom. Hated it there. We also have a very powerful fan so never have had a problem with mildew and we almost always leave our closet door open. We also have a large master bath and the shower is in the very back in a 'room' almost to itself. We have a laundry basket in a cabinet built-in (much like a kitchen garbage pull-out). I keep a basket under a cabinet behind the door in the closet for things that go to the cleaners.

I wouldn't remove the door and would opt to get a separate hamper instead. But I would also remove the hamper from the back of the door and put something else there that would be more useful.

Our closet opens off the bath (and also off the vestibule to the master BR). We shut the bath door when we're taking showers, but it is open most of the time. Directly behind the door I store stuff that we rarely wear -- dresses, heavy coats and sweaters, it is warm here :-).

Thanks everyone. We can't change the swing of the door because it would block the entrance to the bathroom. DH will probably vote for the path of least resistance...a separate hamper....but I am hoping we can reorganize to make better sense and use of the space.

Our closet is off our bathroom and we have an arched opening going into it...no door. I think it looks great and would have absolutely no issues with taking the door off your closet.

Our closet is off our MB. I use a 3-bag clothes sorter on wheels for our laundry. That way it's already sorted when it's laundry day. It's in one corner of our closet. I have a shoe rack on the back of the door, which NEVER gets closed. Ok, I lied. We do close the door when our youngest grandson takes a nap or spends the night. His pack and play sets up in our closet (it's very large and has a heat/air duct) and we close the door for him to sleep. Otherwise, we never close the door.

Can you change the type of door? Would folding or sliding give you better access if you found a nice looking option?.

My closet is off the Mbath without a door, (I haven't had any issues with mold, dampness, ect. but we've only been in for 6 months.) I love it! As far as a hamper, I built a pass through hamper in the middle of the wall that opens on the other side in my laundry room. I do somewhat miss having storage on the back of the door, as I've always hung DH's ties and belts on a over the door system. But that being said if it was me I'd take the door off. They make some cute corner hampers too if that would fit .

We removed our door between the bath and closet. We intend to add a sliding barn type door at some point but it would just be for aesthetics. I love that the swinging door is gone. The closet is brighter and the bath seems more spacious.

In our previous house we had our closet off the master bath without a door. Lived with it that way for 19 years and never had a problem. When we remodeled our bath, we also put in a closet system that had two built-in wire hampers that pulled out. That worked out so well that we did the same in our new build home.

My master closet is separate from the bath, but I have seen plenty of homes where there is no door between the bath and the master closet. It isn't necessary.

That said, can you put a hamper somewhere else in the bath or outside the bath? My hamper is right outside the master bath door. It is easy enough to drop my used clothes and linens inside and easy to access for laundry sorting day.
