Annie, What have you been up to Lately?
Comments (23)Ann T, Cooper is loving having me home more than anyone else, I think, although Makayla and Bud are having a ball playing with me. Elery, well, I'm not so sure, LOL. dcarch, I can't get actually livestock other than the cattle and horses, which can get a week's worth of food and water at a time, until I move out there. We'll get feeder pigs from one of the 4H kids in the spring and slaughter them in the fall, but breeding stock will have to wait until I'm actually living there. I'm kind of leaning toward Mulefoot hogs, as they pasture well, we'll see. I sure want to make some more homemade bacon, though. The Poulet de Bresse rarely makes it out of France, but there is a Canadian variety of the Bresse called Blue Foot. It was nearly eradicated during the Avian flu scare but I understnad remaining stock is in California, so maybe, someday. The flavor is supposed to be far superior to other varieties. Having never eaten it, I can't remark on that. The girls do want to get some laying hens though, all different varieties, LOL. As long as I get good fresh eggs, I guess I don't care, I'd get half a dozen different heirloom varieties but they have to be sturdy enough to withstand Michigan winters without frostbite to their combs, etc. So, big gardens, fresh eggs, farm raised pork, oh yeah, I'm looking forward to eating well. Comments (58)I'm currently reading "Game of Thrones", and really enjoying it. Terriks, I know exactly what you mean about the "porn" in the first episode--we got the 1st season on DVD (no HBO at our house...) and I was sort of appalled. However I liked the overall story so we stuck with it. Interestingly the later episodes did not have nearly as much--perhaps they felt like they needed to reel in a certain kind of viewer at the beginning. Eew! I also enjoy mysteries. Recently I enjoyed the "Lincoln Lawyer" series of books by Michael Connelly. There are five that follow that character. Some of my favorite "special" books I've read from over the past year: "City of Thieves" a great coming of age novel by David Benioff set during the siege of Leningrad. "The Whistling Season" by Ivan Doig. I LOVED this book, but I have to confess some of my book club buds were just okay with it, since it it not super plot-driven. If you like books about interesting people you just want to spend time with, and beautifully crafted language, this is great. Funny and sweet and wistful, narrated by a man looking back at a special year in his childhood in rural Montana. Especially good to read if you are a teacher. "Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrandt. Pretty harrowing non-fiction, but really fascinating, too. "Any Bitter Thing" by Monica Wood. Our book club read this and every person loved it. I've also recommend it to several people, and they all loved it as well. It can be a little hard to find unless you order online, and none of us can figure why it didn't become a huge bestseller. Comments (14)Not sure if anyone wants to read what all I have been doing. My mother who is her nineties is going to have mohs surgery next week. It needs to be changed twice a day for two weeks and I have been on the phone continually trying to find help. Her request was to be able to live in her home and its getting very stressful. Nurses won't come out since its not skilled nursing, . I called another agency this morning and the director lives close to her. Hopefully if they can't help, they can give me the name of a qualified person we can hire. The nurses said they can teach someone to help, but they cannot do this as its not skilled nursing. I understand, but its very hard when you live 3 hours away. She has refused to come live with us, and we are trying very hard to keep her happy at home. Comments (40)I'll probably get rocks thrown at me for admitting to using a box mix....BUT...I have struggled with a banana bread recipe that I am really happy with for quite some time. My neighbor makes really good banana bread...I love it. Very basic recipe but I can not seem to duplicate it. Mine just doesn't come out the same. She used to bring me some when she'd bake but we're not friends anymore SO NO MORE OF HER GOOD BANANA BREAD FOR ME!! lol Anyways...I had 2 overripe bananas at home so I decided to try the Chiquita brand box mix for banana bread...2 bananas water and an egg.....well what do you know....some pretty good banana bread for out of box!!
