OT: 4 bedrooms, or 3 bedrooms + rec room?
Comments (48)Gardenwebber, that is SUCH a good point about "entertaining in their rooms". Here's a thought about your floorplan: have the kids take the back two bedrooms. Move your son to the smaller bedroom, the girls in the room with the closet. Take that wall that you guys put up and turn it into the bunk beds in separate rooms. This will give you a lot more useable floor space. Swing your youngest daughter's bed against the far wall and you will maximize the floor space there. Your son can have the lower bunk bed in his own room next door. That leaves the bedroom directly across from yours as a playroom. That also makes your own bedroom further away from the kids beds. The bunk beds are just drywalled with the mattress only on them. We have always had a rule that our kids cannot have a computer, video games or tv in their bedroom until they are 18. I do not want that stuff cluttering my downstairs living room. An upstairs space for this is the best solution. We built our current home knowing that we were going to have teens in them someday and to give them space separate from ours. Think about this solution. My husband would be happy to talk you and your husband thru the details if it is something you would be interested in. P.S. my 17y.o.'s boyfriend is coming for christmas for 17 days and there is no way in hell that she will be "entertaining" him in her bedroom!!!!!!!!!!!! Comments (5)The bead board appears top be oak. Oak is relatively easy to stain as it takes the stain evenly, needing no pre-stain sealer. One of the functions of stain is to not only impart color initially, but to keep it from turning darker with age. If it has been in place for several months, it has probably already reach its dark point. You could stabilize it and lighten it somewhat by giving it a white "pickling stain". the white pigment gets stuck in the grain and any indentations. Hopefully you have some scraps to practice on before commiting to the whole room. If putting a clear varnish over the paneling, the water based urethane varnishes will dry clear and remain so. Oil based varnishes initially are slightly amber and get more so with age. WB urethanes are also much less odor and VOC's , important when working in inhabited spaces. Both spray well, if you have access to conventional air spray equipment. At least two coats would be advised for uniformity of sheen. I would finish and protect the stained paneling before doing the other paint work. If you should accidentally get paint on the bare wood grain, it will be very difficult to get rid of the blotch, which would show through the stain....See MoreGirls bedroom makeover
Comments (24)I was also going to suggest twin beds pushed together...it makes sense to do this..You can still do one tufted headboard so it looks like a king bed. Or keep your existing king until it needs to be replaced. Save some money, right? You can get a headboard to attach to the wall (I prefer this, myself). I'm not a huge fan of bed skirts, but there are neater ones with box pleats. What about something like this for the reading nook area?: I've never met a kid who wouldn't love this...I did it for my own daughter (her room was jewel tones so I used vintage saris and stamped gold designs around the doorways--kind of a Moroccan feel). I don't find wallpaper difficult to hang. Especially if you're only doing one wall (corners can get tricky). Repositionnable (self stick) wallpaper, I found to be a real pita. You have a large sheet and it sticks to itself and the wall where you don't want it to (think trying to hang an 8 foot sheet of contact paper). Paste or prepasted is slippy so you can slide it over the wall....SO much easier... My now adult daughter still likes the boho look, and we put three of these at differing heights in a corner of her room in her new apartment. They're not electric, but we got some remote controlled led lights. They're magic. If you prefer the chandelier, there's this one from etsy. If you use a very low bulb, it can stay on as a night light and you can use the bedside lamps for real light......See MoreSpare bedroom to Girl Nursery
Comments (26)Eddy are you saying the bed is going now and it will be a nursery? SW Intimate white is a beautiful blush color. First and foremost before painting any type of pink I would make sure you like it near your wood trim. Pink with that tone of wood is not ideal. Have you considered painting your trim white? Also if you keep the bed I wouldnt paint it gold. The lines of the bed are not classic and TBH dated so I wouldnt invest time or money into it. If you still want a bed in the room I would consider a day bed with a trundle. That will be your least costly and most versatile option. Then once your daughter is old enough it could become her big girl bed. Here are some that would be beautiful in your space based off your inspiration photo These could work for guests, parents that want to sleep in room with baby on occasion as well and transition into her bed once she is ready....See Moreauntthelma
