Am I just being impatient?
Comments (9)Oh man! Im sorry to rub it in, everyone. I know most of you are just buried in snow, with no end in sight. If its any consolation, we have had rain. And rain. And rain. Snow for a minute. Then more rain. *yawn* Sooo boring. Yep the seeds are commercial. Botanical Interests, purchased in December. Im pretty sure they are viable. I'm just paranoid, since this is my first attempt and all. I must just learn to trust it! Heh..wouldn't that be something if that one little sprout was a weed. Imagine how foolish I would feel if I coddled that thing all through spring, planted it out, and it ended up spreading everywhere! Not that ANYONE here has done that before. *whistles* Steff ;)...See MoreI'm sorry, I'm so excited I have to post again!
Comments (16)Thanks, guys :-) Some mildly analytical stuff: 1. The containers that have sprouted are all part of a the ones I grouped together in big garbage bags...I guess that ups the temps a bit, having the big plastic around them. I put a lot of containers in the bags for easy transport and for dog protection (from picking up a container and running off with it...which has happened before). Not all the containers in the bags have sprouted (there's a whole lot more of them), but those on the list above have. 2. The sprouted containers are also with a group of containers that are in Southern exposure. ( I have other bags of containers on my porch, in Northern exposure). This proves why it could be bad to have them in Southern exposure, because now, I'm more inclined to worry, since we now have snow and it's going to be in the 20s or lower tonight. But then, the ouotdoor temps have been in the low to mid 20s every night for the past two weeks and that didn't keep them from sprouting. ..but I'm not looking at those containers or opening them up...not for a few days, at least. Whatever will be will be...and I have a feeling a lot of those sprouts will be just fine. --I think I do need to slip a thermometer inside one of those bags of containers, though. I'm curious as to how much warmer it is in there. Linda...See MoreBeing impatient or something wrong?
Comments (10)Spidermites: see below for a very recent thread on this topic with some suggestions. you can also do a search and will see many similar discussions. There are several options before you have to break out the chemicals. Bush tomatoes: Definitely lay off the fertilizer, and always use a tomato specific fertilizer that's lower in nitrogen compared with the generic garden stuff. High levels of nitrogen promote leaf and plant growth at the expense of flowers. This means big plant with little or no fruit. The problem here, is that this is a determinate plant, so even if you back off on the fertilizing, it doesn't produce a succession of crops so you may not be getting much more fruit. We should start a petition to get Miracle Grow to remove the picture of the tomato from their 'All purpose' fertilizer... Comments (8)Oh Patty, sounds like you had some fun and found some real treasures. Isn't it great to do that and NOT spend very much money? I've bought some lovely pitchers at TS, my DIL loves them, and I've even kept a few for myself too. I was lucky enough to find one of the butter dishes too, even had a glass liner in it. I had planned to paint it like one I had seen in one of my painting magazines, but it is pretty just as it is so I've left it. I figured I could use it on my desk to hold paperclips, and I got a really fancy handled knife to use as a letter opener--fun to take something and repurpose it and give it new life. Karen, you are so right. I'd buy Judith's book in a heartbeat--she wouldn't even have to write a word if she didn't want to--just a collection of pics! ;o) Jaybird, don't forget to post a pic of your decorated sideboard so we can ooh & ahh over it too, okay? Luvs...See Morejofus, ( Englewood, Fl zone 10a )
