Is it too weird to have upper cabinets...
Comments (17)How short on height for the Kitchen Aid are you? Is it a tilt head where you want to be able to tilt the head under the cabinet? It looks like the tilt head models are under 14" high but it doesn't say how high they are with the head tilted - it looks like that might be an extra 8 inches or so. Dropping the counter a few inches for the baking counter might not get you enough extra space. If your kitchen is short on storage, every inch you drop the counter loses you 24" deep storage - about twice as much as you lose when you make a 12" deep upper an inch less. If the issue is only when the mixer head is tilted, could you pull it out from under the cabinet when you are using it? We use our KA a lot so I'm glad it is on the counter ready to use. Ours is the stand model and we thought we had planned for enough space between the uppers and counter to accommodate its 16 1/2" height. Unfortunately, it turned out that our floor isn't flat and is at its highest point right where the dishwasher which meant that the counter top ended up an inch closer to the ceiling than we had planned. There wasn't enough height to allow the mixer to go under the light rail on the cabinet. We ended up going with a shorter under cabinet light in that spot and ending the light rail to make a spot for the mixer to go:...See MoreUpper cabinet width - how wide is too wide?
Comments (29)cpartist, I did, I don't like the style. I wanted white and they're all too modern looking for my 1926 bungalow. Janelle Van, look at the comments above, one had a link for a sagulator. If you can look at the specs for Ikea's cabinets and see what material the shelves are made of and how thick they are, you can see how much weight you can put on it before there's noticeable sag. Very helpful! latifolia, the new ones are 36" plus 4" crown. There's going to be about a foot between the crown and the ceiling. I'm okay with it. I need a large step stool to reach anything in my top cabinets now and I'm adding 8 cabinets on the other side of the kitchen where there are currently 0. Way more than enough storage!...See MoreHow close to a window can kitchen cabinets get?
Comments (16)Perhaps EIK has been relegated to lower priority but I think on top wall between full depth counter and window I would place some open counter . I might extend the 24 in deep counter a bit more and you can do clever things like raise the counter height /obviously reduce the depth from 24 inches/ change the material/ for this continuation to window end. Computer use /phone use time/coffee/morning and other small meal times/etc at counter with good stools/natural height for you folks/pendant lights and/or open shelving etc. I think with the space being so walled in that delegating at least some footage for open counter if you don't want a small table would be wise. Once a couple people are in the space it will be used I think and expand the dynamic generally. What about betwe 5-7 ft for this??? On sink side I'd extend 24 in deep counter a bit more/then cut back depth and install what you think you need/full height storage/ more counter with upper/lower cabs? End at a logical point before window and place a couple plants and wall art in the last 2 or 3 feet. Single bowl sink in 27 or 30 in cab should be good for townhouse property/ your sink size looks enormous....See MoreUpper kitchen cabinet shallower next to window
Comments (12)Thanks! They're Caesarstone Noble Grey. Actually quite a cool tone (we were really trying to avoid any beige, and although it looks a tiny bit beige in some of the online pics it doesn't read that way at all in person) but the hardwood really warms the whole space up. We did our kitchen as part of a massive almost-gut reno on a 110-year-old house as first-time homeowners who knew nothing about houses, renos or design. This was all done on a somewhat constrained budget (see: Ikea cabs) but we did get some layout and aesthetic assistance from a very lovely and affordable designer who gave us a good deal to help her build her portfolio, and that was some of the best money we spent....See MoreRelated Professionals
