What to do around kitchen window
I am looking for some thoughts on what to do around this window. The granite will be a pretty bold Bordeaux so I will most likely use a fairly simple tile back splash. The stone will extend into the window area and serve as the window sill. The window will be trimmed with 3" square cut wood painted white. Should I extend the back splash up or have it go across at counter height? Should I not do back splash here at all and end at the upper cabinet on the right?

Comments (11)ugh, Bill, I am so confused. and i am soooo sorry to be so blonde. And you are so great to help... but I am seriously confused. You say "i did" as in I thought I understood you.... but my window, as currently installed.. doesn't give me the option of angling in to the window.. I think that you are saying to use the Keriband ( and ps by the way I am not sure what that is.._ between the tile and the wood.. and then to paint the hell out of it with marine paint. can you also tell me more about installing the kerdi to make it adhere to the wood? many thanks took strips of Kerdiband, and bridged from the cement board to the wood frame, so that there'd be no cracking between the two substrates. Any time you have something like this, where the rate of expansion and contraction will be different between two different substrates, you need to compensate for it some how. (in this case, there WAS a return to the window, but it was painted with a waterproof boat paint, so it's still the same scenario as yours) This will also help protect against water intrusion. I am a perfectionist so I can appreciate the expert opinions of “doing it right”. I just was trying to prevent a costly mistake from being more costly to solve. Comments (11)Schluter looks bad. Don't do that. :) I'm not sure what you're trying to miter. I think you want to wrap it around the corner, right? What gets mitered? I think it works in your example because (1) it's a very lumpy tile install so it can be kind of "off" and (2) it's blurry. Do you have room for tile inside your window? And are you sure there isn't a finished edge trim piece available?...See Moremark_rachel

6 years agoI am waiting for the stone to go in before deciding on the back splash. The stone is VERY bold, so I am thinking of a fairly plain tile with maybe an accent behind the cooktop. The view is why we bought the property. :-)

Paul, if you decide to go that route, be sure to let your fabricator know in advance so that they template accordingly. This will require a much more precise cut than most jobs because you won't have backsplash tile to cover any gaps at the wall. There's no guarantee, even with new construction, that your walls will be perfectly plumb.
We dealt with a similar issue for our hutch counter because the tile we'd selected for this areas was thinner than the majority of backsplash tiles. This wall was slightly bowed out (21 yr old home at the time) so it was a bit tricky but they did a great job. That might not have been the case if I hadn't known to tell the fabricator beforehand.
Because I need to see things visually...
#1, no tile around window, end tile at left edge of upper:
#2, tile even with bottom of uppers
#3, tile even with bottom of hood
#4, tile to ceiling
I vote for #2 or #3, I'm leaning towards #2. IMO, #1 looks like you ran out of tile before the job was done. I ruled out #4 because I'd like to see the wall color on the window wall for continuity around the room.HTH!
