Need help for my open kitchen, dining and living room layout design
Comments (5)It would be possible to put a play corner in the first two drawings but not in alternative 2. I would recommend a corner of storage furniture to corral the toys. I am usually a fan of built-ins but not in this case because eventually the kids will outgrow their toys and you won't need that storage there anymore. The built-in exception would be a window seat under one of those windows on the plans. Some of the storage could be cabinets or bookshelves for bins or toys underneath a window seat. I'm not a fan for toy box style storage because they either become a black hole or the kids throw everything out of them looking for what they want and then do't put the rest of it back. As for the kitchen placement, near to the deck would be best in you like to eat outdoors on the deck or entertain on the deck. We entertain a lot and the kitchen is on the other side of the house from the patio. It's a real pain and a big part of my design brief for the architect was for the kitchen to be next to the patio. I even wanted a pass-through window from the kitchen sink to the patio for ease of clean up but unfortunately I wasn't able to work that out....See MoreNeed Help with Kitchen Design/Layout
Comments (22)How often do you use your microwave and what do you use it for? Mine is in my laundry/pantry room, just a few steps from the kitchen. I use it so seldom that this isn't an issue for me but it would be annoying if you use it more regularly. I guess I'm in the minority as I rather like your kitchen layout and location in the house. I can totally understand why you'd want your dining and living areas to take advantage of those great windows and proximity to the deck. And the kitchen is still close enough to take food to the take for outside dining. You have a wall so people directly entering your home won't see the kitchen anyway. I didn't see where you are planning on your DW. Does Kosher require two DW's? I don't know much about that, sorry. I'm not clear on your dimensions but if the sinks can be moved while still providing clearance for someone to be working at the sink and someone else to be cooking, your DW should really not be in the major prep zone between sink and cooktop. I think what bothers me most about your current design is the bathroom door opening facing the living spaces. Especially the close proximity to the dining table. Yuck. I would place the door towards the entry and train family to close the door when finished using it. At least with the door in the entry way, if it is left open, the toilet is more obscured. And if you go to answer the door, you could always close the BR door if someone left it open as it would just take a quick tap to close it so your visitor isn't greeted by the toilet. I think you said the table would usually be smaller than shown here in the plan? And only this big when extra leaves are added? If so, the cabinet should be OK there. But if you will have the table extended most of the time, that size cabinet would be crowding the table too much. I don't know if you were planning this as additional storage space for other things but bringing it into the DR would allow for storage for nice serving pieces and other pretties you don't use daily. It would also make a good location for a coffee/tea bar....See MoreNeed help with kitchen design layout
Comments (4)"change flooring with dark wood tile" Not what you asked about, but I wanted to give you a heads up that dark floors in a kitchen are high maintenance. They show every teeny crumb like a boulder, and every tiny bit of dust. You will get frustrated with the amount of swiffering you will need to do. If that is fine with you, great, but I just thought it would be good to warn you....See MoreNeed help with Kitchen Layout/Design for a gut remodel job - thanks!
Comments (7)Thanks @AnnKH - good questions... What I disliked about the kitchen before was it was a galley type kitchen but with an island that literally felt like it blocked the fridge and sink for me. I used to hit my hip on the island countertop all the time to reach the sink and it was super annoying. So I'd like an open layout this time and have one large island with the sink in it so I have a simple triangle or oven, sink and fridge with nothing in between. I like the idea of putting dishes away easily and having the fridge and sink near each other too. The kitchen did feel dark but we already took down the wall to the family so there's a 13' opening and the family room is flooded with light. We also opened up the hallway to the living room to get light from there too. I'm not sure adding another window would do much b/c that side of the house just doesn't get as much light. I would definitely love a breakfast nook because it was awkward to make our food and then take everything to the dining room. I love separate dining for formal events...but I want casual dining for everyday. That way if someone wants ketchup, they can just pop up and grab it!...See Moredamiarain
