Glass stair railing walls not tall enough
Comments (12)Not my house but here's an idea of what it looks like. We are only talking about the "level" area on the floor (the component on the right in this pic), and not the glass that goes up or down the side of the stairs themselves. Basically, just several sheets of tempered glass with no posts or rods. In each case, there is a hard wall at one end that you could attach a rod onto, but nothing to attach at the other end. Suffice to say, I am pretty peeved at my nasty neighbor who called this in. We are ending up with about $25,000 of additional repairs that we hadn't planned for.......See MoreGlass stair railing thickness
Comments (7)I quote nd sell glass railings all the time and have yet to ever hear of a requirement for standoff type fittings requiring 7/8" glass. That is why I suggested the building dept to see if it is their own requirement. You very well may need to use 9/16" lamnated glass however....See MoreLow iron glass for stair railing
Comments (12)The glass in question will be the railing for my stairs. The location of the stairs is such that you will only see the glass from a sharp angle, either at the bottom looking up at the glass or at the top looking down. There's really no way to look straight through the glass. There is nothing interesting to see on either side of the glass, just the brown wood floors and gray walls in the stairway. I don't care if the colors aren't true. What I'm worried about is, when you are looking at the glass at a sharp angle, if you will see a band of green glass rather than seeing what is on the other side of the glass. Picture tinted windows on a car. When you look directly at them you can see through them more clearly. But if you look at a sharp angle, you just see the tint and don't clearly see through to the other side (depending on how dark the tint is). This is what I worry about -- as you approach and enter the stairs, will regular 1/2" glass look like a translucent wall of green or will it still be clear? (I know the edges will be green, I'm not talking about that.) I don't want to spend more for the low iron but in the big scheme of things it's not a ton of money so I can justify it if it will make a difference....See Morerefinish stair rail or paint stair rail AND spindles dark
Comments (14)I’m not the OP but this question relates to my current dilemma. We are replacing treads on stairs and the “discussion” is stuck on the risers. Should they be stained to match or painted white. I have seen both but it seems more recent design is going with stained risers. Since the last time we tried to redo these stairs was 13 years ago and we couldn’t agree on a lot of things and scrapped the project, I don’t want to get stuck again. The pics are of our staircase ripped out carpeting, a pic with stained risers, and a pic with painted risers. Since we are going through the work and expense, I want to make sure we aren’t putting in dated design from the get go. The other point we are discussing is wood spindles vs metal....See MoreUser
