replacing iron railing with a composite like one...
Comments (1)I'm doing a new porch railing down our brick stairs and have decided on the Premier white composite railing. To me, it looks the most like real painted wood than any of the other composites I saw (Timbertech, Trex, Fairway). I think the composites are more expensive than the vinyl but they look a lot better too, especially for the front of the house. I have no idea how well they hold up, but I'm willing to give it a try. I saw the Premier railing at 84 Lumber - not sure if Home Depot or Lowe's would carry it. I'm sure the Premier website would refer you to a local dealer in your area....See MoreStair rail height
Comments (3)The IRC requires that a guard rail along a stair run be a minimum of 34" above the nosings. Since the guard occurs across the path of travel (and is not continuous) I would consider it to be substantially the same as a balcony or"raised floor area" in terms of safety and would make it at least 36" high. The 34" minimum height assumes the path of travel is parallel to the guard rail and this is obviously not the case for your stair. Codes are minimums and often do not anticipate dangerous conditions that are not typical so you should follow your own judgement. I take it the winders are grandfathered. They would not be allowed by modern codes. Be very careful how you detail them especially the inside railing where the winders provide little to no foot space and falls are highly likely....See MoreHow are these stair railings to code?
Comments (20)The main issue I see in the 1st picture is the handrail itself, it has to be terminated. R311.7.8.4 Continuity. Handrails shall be continuous for the full length of the flight, from a point directly above the top riser of the flight to a point directly above the lowest riser of the flight. Handrail ends shall be returned or shall terminate in newel posts or safety terminals. Exceptions: 1. Handrail continuity shall be permitted to be interrupted by a newel post at a turn in a flight with winders, at a landing, or over the lowest tread. 2. A volute, turnout, or starting easing shall be allowed to terminate over the lowest tread. Other than that, hard to say about clearances at the bottom, the main concern for that clearance so the kids head don't get stuck in there... as the horizontal runs go, there was a fuss in the beginning when this type of railing hit the scene and I believe at one time it was something about that in the code but it's been gone from there for a while, so I guess if anything it is left up to jurisdiction to make that decision....See MoreStair Handrail Installation
Comments (5)The steps were carpeted, so only the wood of the railing is changing. I did the steps in maple, with the main reason being that I was having difficulty finding a oak caps in a modern style for a low price. I knew maple wouldn't stain as well as oak going into it. I'll admit it was a pain, but I got around it after trying enough types of stain. As you can see from the pic, the steps have been stained grey. I'm going to match the railing to the grey steps, which is why I'm changing the wood....See Morekudzu9
