Glass stair railing thickness

I am hoping to install glass as the railing for my stairs. I found a glass guy I like but he said something that doesn't sound quite right to me. All along I had planned to mount the glass with a base shoe. But then I thought about mounting the glass to the side of the stairs using standoffs. He said that I'd have to use 7/8" glass instead of 1/2" glass if I mount the glass using standoffs.

That seems awfully thick to me, I'm not sure if I've ever seen glass railing that thick in a home. I've looked at tons of photos online but none of the photos are from an angle where you could tell how thick the glass railing is.

Does this sound right? Do I need glass that thick? And how will glass that thick look? I'm worried glass that thick will kind of kill the clean, minimalist look I'm trying to achieve by using standoffs instead of a base shoe.

Thanks!
