Hello! Still alive and growing! =oD
Comments (1)Hi Merricat-I've been growing banana plants from seed for the last couple of years. Though I've been growing Ensete not Musa (the true banana). I found the seeds in the spring at our local nursery. They are large, hard, marble like seeds that only come 5 to a package. They take 1-6 months to germinate and I've grown 2 out of 5 and 3 out of 5 each year. They grow so fast! The seeds I started this spring are already plants that are 4 feet tall with huge leaves. I'm sure they wouild get even taller if I was in a warmer climate and could leave them outdoors all year. I plant them out in 1/2 barrels and bring them in each winter. This year I'm going sacrifice one and experiment with leaving it outdoors. I planted it in a protected area and will cut down the foliage and mulch it. And keep my fingers crossed! Unfortunately, Ensete don't bear fruit or grow pups or I could send you some. When I travelled to Florida this winter, I tried to find banana seeds but the folks there just looked confused. They just pick off the pups and don't bother with starting from seed. Try this web site if you want to order some seeds. Here is a link that might be useful: Banana tree seeds...See MoreArethey still alive?
Comments (3)If the stems are brown, they are dead. If the stems are still green, you have a shot. Clip the stems a bit, and if they are very dry and not flexible, dead. There are several posts here on the Mini Forum on how to successfully keep those store minis alive inside during the winter....See MoreFig tree alive, but still hasn't started leafing out
Comments (3)Becca, It's been shocked. If the limbs are green when nicked, it is alive. Keep it outside in as warm and sun drenched a spot that you have, and be patient. Any prediction of a possible frost and bring it inside, ASAP. You can get a freeze all the way to Memorial Day. Fig trees are very resilient though. The advanced buds probably got frozen. It only takes a short period of time at 32 degrees F. or colder to zap them dead. The more dormant buds should kick in very nicely, give it time. When it kicks in it will surprise you and take off. What variety is it? Moses...See MoreWondering if my Eastern Red Buds Are Still Alive
Comments (8)you need to report it to the city.. and suggest that without proper followup pruning.. the tree might end up being a bush and that can be one heck of a problem in that 2 foot wide hell strip ... and the odds of the city coming back to prune for 5 years is low to nil ... they need to replace it ... looking at that soil .. it appears the tree basically died back to the trunk due to lack of water.. and the nightmare of reflected and retained heat from the pavements ... if it were out back on my 5 acres.. i would spend the 5 years pruning it back into shape ... but where it is.. it has to be replaced.. imo ... fall is planting time.. you might want to try to get them to come out.. while it still has leaves on it.. so they can see it .... ken...See MoreBrad KY 6b
