Ya, we love them. It always crack me up when they sing....

Like why are they singing at night ? And my hubby says , " Bec they think the spot light (or street light ) is the sun. " He always give me that answer..hahaha.

In the morning, we have so many birds chirping and singing but at night they are special when most of the birds are asleep.

Sometimes, I wonder what kinds of birds sings at night. They are wonderful singers...lol.

They must be boycotting my property. However, the soft hoot of two resident owls makes up for that lack.

I hear owls, too. We used to let Millie outside with us in the evenings, until we saw one swoop down over the yard. We brought her in, and that was the end of her evenings joining us for late evening BBQ’s! Lisa

We have a few different kinds of owls. Some get really loud and make weird barking like calls certain times of the year.

In the daytime we have hawks and both Golden and Bald eagles since we live near a river.

Sometimes we hear mockingbirds at night. In the summer the frogs are deafening when it rains especially at night.

Here we have nightingales. There's an amazing amount of birdsong during the night, but it hasn't started yet.

I love mockingbirds, too: such gay, gallant creatures.

No mockingbirds here in Europe I'm afraid. In my place the song of the male Eurasian blackbird (Turdus merula -- what a name!!) early in the morning signifies spring.

Jasmin, thank you for reminding me. Yup, it is the tree frogs that annoys me. That is usually when I shut my windows when I can't sleep. They are loud and ear deafening. You can't see them but they are there. And when things finally quite down but your ears start to buzzed. I don't know which is more annoying.

We get all kinds of birds. Especially during winter and it becomes bird paradise, you will see birds from up North like Robin's, Blue Herrings and more . We go for a drive at wildlife refuge. You will see so many birds and alligators in Titusville.

Florida is very popular for bird watches. They can name more birds than I can..I am bad...lol.

I consider you very fortunate to have a Mockingbird in your garden. I've no idea whether they are welcome or not, as my only introduction to these birds is from a hit song from the 1960's, recorded here by Aretha Franklin and Ray Johnson. I loved it then, and still do...

Not yet this year. Winter is still trying to hold on but I expect those days are ahead. Some years a mockingbird will sit on the roof of our house and sing into our bedroom window. They're loud; what they lack in originality, they make up for in sheer volume and willingness to perform 24/7 for hours on end. They're great mimics and can go through bits and pieces of other birds' songs, never repeating any for several minutes. I've known them to imitate other things- the human voice, cats and other animals, even mechanical sounds like cell phones or gas pumps. I'm thankful none of the locals have learned those! Mockingbirds tend to be very territorial so once they find a place they like, it's hard to dissuade them from it. They can be nasty neighbors to other birds even when they don't have eggs or nestlings.

We have other night "singers". Right now the spring peepers are starting their annual performance on the warmer nights. Later on I'll hear whippoorwills, my personal favorite, a sign that summer is upon us. During long summer nights there are the cicadas. It's hard to understand how bugs can make a sound as deafening as theirs. It seems like I hear the owls most in winter. Great horned owls can be formidable predators but I think screech owls are appealing little birds, not at all as spooky as their call.

We don't have owls, but we do have 3 different species of dove, all with their own coos, some of whom stay up quite late. Cicadas are definitely the sound of summer! We're in the city so it's not as overwhelming but when we spend the night at my parents' place it's absolutely deafening.

My favorites, although they too can get loud, are what we call the Modem Toads. They're just your regular garden variety (heh) toad, but they have a huge tadpole-making party in our pond couple times a year, and their collective sustained seduction chirps sound exactly like the old dial-up/fax sound.

We also live on a water bird commute highway. There are always gulls and they yell constantly, but at sunset there are cormorants, herons and pelicans taking the same path overhead, presumably from the swamps of the West Bank to the Bayou Sauvage preserve. They're silent though, so you have to be looking up!

As I sit on the patio this morning, I’m surrounded by bird calls from every direction, but the mockingbird sings the loudest. They must be a hardy, adaptable bird. There numbers haven’t seem to have diminished since my childhood. There’s nothing funnier than seeing two full grown cats racing for the house with a mockingbird or two chasing them in. They are fierce protectors of their young. Lisa

Not hearing Mockers yet (tho the scrub jays have been busy) but we've enjoyed watching the latest crop of young hawks.

We've had the hawks here too, interesting how I've never noticed them before. And lots of "song" from what DH says are frogs.

Lisa, you are smart to protect darling Millie from those owls. We lost a stray that just showed up at our door to an owl. She was way heavier than Millie too but same sweet, serene personality. It wasn't even officially our cat but was still heartbreaking.

I do love seeing Mockers chase off Ravens/Crows. And both Crows and Mockers will drive off Hawks. It's fascinating to watch.

I remember in Florida years a frog (toad?) in a ditch that sounded exactly like an electric buzzer. I've been fortunate to live most of my life in places where there were lots of bird, frog, insect sounds. I don't think I've paid enough attention to them.

Later this spring the cuckoos will begin to utter their calls. Yes, they sound just like the clocks.

By the way, spring is approaching! We had our first thunderstorm of the year last night, and it sounded wonderful.

What a lovely thread! I love and adore the birds in our yard. I never noticed the mockingbird " mocking " or singing at night but I'll listen for it. We have one in particular that is always been by my garage and twice this week gotten trapped in my SUV when I leave the trunk open to unload. I have many cardinals , a few blue jays and one downy woodpecker. Lots of mourning doves and to my delight a handful of eastern bluebirds as well . And in late summer sometimes I'm blessed to see a pair of quail . I have a cavalier spaniel who is very quick so the quail tend to move along :(

This middle bird: no idea what kind but one of them flew into our garage and got let into the house accidentally for 3 days! He stayed in our Christmas tree! It was hilarious. He was very hard to get out of the house

The middle bird is a wren. Their scientific family name is Troglodytidae, which suggests they like caves--dark largish but closed spaces--and they're often bold birds, not afraid of close contact with people. It might have been relatively comfortable in your house.

Your birds are soooo beautiful. The common birds of the eastern U.S. are, I think, on the whole prettier than our local bird population. We don't have cardinals or bluebirds here.

My family has property in the Mississippi piney woods and that’s where I see all the good stuff. Songbirds, woodpeckers, ducks, cormorants, the occasional anhinga, once even a flyover from a Northern Harrier. I was so excited you’d think I’d run into Beyonce.

The Bald and Golden Eagles like to sit above our chicken coops in the high trees and gawk down at them. The runs are covered w wire and shadecloth so they're safe but they all squawk and run in the coop and carry on, long after the eagles get bored and leave lol. I need to take my camera out there. They hunt along the river here and nest in tall trees.
