Why is it so hard to find nice soapstone in Kansas?
Comments (6)smilingjudy, I laughed out loud when I saw your post. My husband had just one minute before asked me "have you looked at sturgis?" when I scrolled down and saw your question. The answer is, yes, I asked them, but they're a fabricator. They get their stone from the same supply houses as everyone else, CST, Case Supply, Bedrock, DalTile, etc. I did a little research on slate and actually it looks very much like soapstone (matte, very buttery to the touch, and pretty darn impervious to stains and such) if you pick the right variety. There have been a few threads here on GW about it. Thanks for the empathy everyone! Kelleg, thanks for the tip to try Home Depot. I never would have dreamed to look there for something so specialized. Anita...See MoreWhy is good soapstone so hard to find???
Comments (5)oh I feel your pain! I agonized over wanting soapstone for my perimeter counters. Brazilian Black or Mumbai Grey from M. Tex - no other soapstone I found compared in look or overall quality. I wanted black or grey - no green. I searched locally for months and months. I am putting 50+ sq. ft. of calacatta on my island, and I was really taxing my budget as is. One day I was at my fabricators swooning over my marble slabs (which, btw, took JUST as long to find!) and I saw this single slab of Cambrian Black Antique granite. It had that same sensual feel as soapstone I loved - not quite the same overall - but I really *did* like it. I took a breath and let go of my soapstone vision and opted for the Cambrian Black. It looks amazing next to my marble with that very matte almost chalky look, but still BLACK. Anyhoo, just wanted you to know that I feel your pain and was THIS close to just shipping slabs from M.Tex, too. Hope all works out for you!...See MoreWhy is a backsplash so hard to choose?
Comments (78)Basically from a professional stand point, I deal with this dilemma on a daily basis. In my opinion having multiple levels of contrast really makes a kitchen stand out. What I mean is that the flooring should be opposite color from the cabinets, the counter top should match the floors, but the backsplash should tie all the elements together. I personally don't like when the floors, cabinets, countertop, and backsplash all match too much. For me to give my honest opinion on which backsplash I would put in my house, I would have to know the color of the floors and cabinets. However, without seeing those factors, I like the backsplash on the right more since it has more contrast then the option on the left, but still maintains similar colors too the counter. Regardless of my opinion, there is no real rule to this and is just my personal preference. Good luck on you decision. -Deluxe Vanity...See MoreChoosing finishes! Why is this so hard??!?!?
Comments (18)zippity1 The fact is that the labor and equipment required to apply a "paint" to cabinets (not actual paint, but baked on catalyzed conversion varnish is more expensive. The wood may or may not be cheaper depending upon the species (painted cabinets are still made of wood, no? - my painted cabs are made of alder with the exception of the center door panel). I've had 4 places quote my cabinets and every single one of them came back at least 10% higher for paint. One was 50% higher. Like I said, "painted" can mean a lot of things. Painting an MDF cabinet door by spraying it, in place, which I have seen in on HGTV and DIY network for example, will result in a less than durable finish. Hand-painting also. A factory applied "paint" (which is not paint) is certainly more expensive than stained. Every day of the week. Every RTA cabinet maker I've looked into charges more for painted. It's a HUGE red flag that they are saying to the Katie that painting is cheaper. HUGE. What kind of "paint" is that?...See MoreHome Interiors with Ease
