Stainless Steel chicken wire - source?
Comments (7)After an hour of looking on the web I found a company in Berkeley CA that has stainless steel (304) chicken wire in the size I wanted (1' mesh). It's not as expensive as other stainless steel wire mesh/cloth I found previously. I am going to purchase a 48' * 100 ' roll. Does anyone living in the Santa Rosa, CA area want to purchase half the roll? Cost would be half of whatever I pay. http://www.twpinc.com/twpinc/control/product/~category=TWPCAT_19/~product_id=001X001S0320W48HEX Here is a link that might be useful: http://www.twpinc.com/twpinc/control/product/~category=TWPCAT_19/~product_id=001X001S0320W48HEX...See MoreMudroom cabinet design help (sorry OT)
Comments (37)Have you considered doors for at least some of the cabinets? I worry about the visual clutter of having everything sitting out there, especially when kids are doing much of the putting-away. I'm less worried about the crowded feeling by the door than many of the others, but I also live in a smallish house where space by the doors is at a premium. I thought you might find these photos helpful. They're of a small cabinet by our back door. The door is hemmed in by a wall on one side and this cabinet to the other. The cabinet is about 7.25 inches deep from the front of the doors to the back of the cabinet that runs into the dishwasher, providing an interior space that's about 5.25 inches deep. We live not far from you and share your weather, and this tiny cupboard is a lifesaver because it provides a space for wet shoes, bird seed, and assorted other things we use outside. You have a significantly deeper space, so it will be even more functional. It also doesn't feel claustrophobic or too tight to us, and the small loss of space by the door is far outweighed by not having things pile up on the counter and floor there! Here's the doorway with cabinet: Here's the interior, showing how shallow it is, but how much stuff we store there. It regularly gets crammed with much more stuff (all the more reason to have doors!), but I'd just cleaned it out when I snapped this photo. Please ignore the cardboard dividers in the cabinet--I didn't want to have permanent dividers put in, and I've been playing around with spacing before buying or making something for the space. As for the bench issue, I think that its utility may somewhat depend on if you're shoes-off or shoes-on people. If you leave shoes by the door, then it's helpful to have a place for the kids to sit down to put them on. I think you'll love having some sort of built-in cabinet there. It will make that space much more functional....See MoreCoordinating Mudroom and Kitchen cabinets -- too many finishes?
Comments (8)OK, maybe this sounds silly, but if it were me I would stay away from the cream cabinets in the mudroom. It is, after all, a MUD room and while you will certainly keep it clean, mine has seems to continually get tracks and smudges here and there. Our lockers and bench don't show it so much in the honey spice stain, but I am continually wiping down the light colored walls (where my kitties jump from the floor to the window - no kids, but if you have them, you'll have similar issues I'd think). The ebony stain coordinating with the island sounds good to me. If you have good lighting in the mud room, it should not be too dark. And if the stain is that dark could you do a wood other than cherry and still be ok (to save on the costs)? If it is separated from the kitchen island at least somewhat, will it be noticeable? Maybe try the same stain on similarly grained woods... just an idea. Sounds like you will have a wonderful mudroom if it is like nomorebluekitchen's! Oh, and I'd definitely go for the lockers... I LOVE my lockers. Cheers, -Kim...See MoreI'm going to purchase another C. E. Shepherd wire composter
Comments (25)<Keep it simple.> Couldn't agree more. That is the wire fence I made several from w/o the stakes just formed a 3 or 4ft circle. Those are great for garden/yard waste, grass, or leaves. Anything but food scraps that will attract rodents. To keep rodents out you need something with a tighter mesh like 1/2 or 1/4 inch hardware cloth. Then you also need something to cover the top both for the rodents and to keep rain from making the pile too wet. I don't turn my pile but for those who do or want to you would need something that will accommodate your height. I'm 6ft tall and find that reach over a 4ft fence to lift something a bit awkward, uncomfortable, and frankly dangerous for my spine. So for those making their own "bin" the height can be the most important factor if or when you decide to turn your pile. To make the circle you just multiply 3.14 by the width (diameter) you want so 3.14 x 3 = 9.42 ft. So make slightly longer like say 10ft and you will have just enuff to cut tangs to hold the circle together, tho since you ain't buildin no watch it doesn't really matter now does it? Just makes it easier for the math if say you want to make more than one bin. 3.14 x 4ft = 12.56ft so make it 12ft for round numbers and you will be surprised just how much more volume that will hold even if it is only 2 or 2.5ft high....See MoreSaypoint zone 6 CT
