W daylilies 2018
W daylilies have their turn today! Quote of the day: “ Respect your haters, they are the ones who think you are better than them.”
When Pigs Fly Was added to the garden in the spring of 2016. It is a tall and a wonderful, large red bloom. The stats say it is colorfast. I’m thinking this will be a great plant with a little more time.
Wide Wide World is an oldie that will always be in my garden. It’s growing in mostly shade, and does pretty well. It’s a lovely color that I wish photographed better.
Wanda Lou Lovely is a gorgeous bloom, the above blooms were the first ever in my garden. The true to eye color is a somewhere between the two photos above. WLL was added in the spring of 2015, I was getting impatient for blooms, they were worth the wait.
Witch's Stick is a recent addition to the garden. I added It because it’s a late bloomer that’s not yellow and it’s tall. It hasn’t reached its potential yet, hoping this season it takes a leap.

WEBSTER'S PINK WONDER: Tall and with large blooms. Has rebloomed for me.
WEDDING BAND:
WHEEL OF TIME: Loved the pattern, but the third sepal never seemed to fold back. Bud count was between 8 to 10. I left the garden this past summer.
WHIRLPOOL GALAXY: I loved the bloom, but it seemed to put more energy into producing foliage than scapes. I had an 8 fan clump with only one scape this past summer with 6 buds. It performed like the for three years in a prime location with sun all day. It too left this past summer.
WHITE EYES PINK DRAGON: Fabulous plant.
WHITE PERFECTION: Lovely near white. Slow to increase.
WIDE AWAKE: Was placed in the ground the Fall of 2016. Too new to evaluate. It is a late bloomer.
WIDE-EYED WALLY: Too new to evaluate, but it is a Bennett, so it should do well for me.
WILD CHERRY WINE: Probably one of my top two favorite Bennett intros.

WILLOW DEAN SMITH: Tall and stately. Will throw a polytepaled bloom every so often. Makes large fans, but is slow to increase. Great if you are limited on space, as I am.
WISEST OF WIZARDS: An oldie but a goodie.
WOMAN AT THE WELL: Relatively new to me. I am still evaluating. This coming season will be its third and if I remember correctly, it is usually the third year when this plant will really show its stuff.
WOMEN SEEKING MEN: This makes large fans, so give it some room. Very tall. Blooms mid to late season for me.
WOODSIDE ROMANCE: An old Apps intro. I fell in love with this one when it was featured on the front of his catalogue.

Comments (30)urchinsushi, longest bloom time really varies. Each daylily has a region it does best in and this is a baseline but not always a guarantee. Some like constant full sun, some like some shade and the amount of blooms or season depends on that. Some rebloom extending blooms season but you can't depend on them reblooming. The more north you are the less likely. I've had some that did terrible in one part of the yard and great in another and there seems to be no reason why. I've traded for good bloomers from other and had them do well, other times not. The best way to have them bloom them all summer would be to have a variety based on bloom times. Comments (12)Oh my, what lovelies everyone is adding!! Ummmm....no, Kay, my number is still higher than any of these. My "more than 30" was the bottom number!! I just looked at my invoices and lists and embarrassment is not even in the picture!!! Let's revise that number to more than 30 but less than 70!! Hahaha!! And of course that excludes the spring orders. When I get the nerve, I will list some of these. I did look at what I ordered and why. Some of these were ordered for the hybridizer-I realized from many of your posts that I do not have plants or very many plants from hybridizers Bennett (these perform well for me but I still want some others of his), Davisson, Lambertson, Meadows, etc. I wanted to add some to see how they perform in my garden. I also order what I like which is not always the latest, frilliest, fanciest lily. So, if I see one that calls my name, even if it is an oldie, I put it on my list. Sorta like Debra and the Wilkerson lilies. And, of course, some of you are indeed enablers and those also go on my list. I am drooling over all this loveliness. Sherry, though Stella D'oro flowers maybe plain, your placement of it among the hostas and heucheras is perfection! It elevates this daylily to first class and showcases its flowers and foliage beautifully! Julia, I love that combo of Enter Laughing with the purple coneflowers in the foreground and the purple flowers in the background. Wow! Too lovely for words. Celeste, Cheddar Cheese is just marvelous in that group shot! I also love your combo of Living in Amsterdam with the blue clematis next to it and the coral daylily in the background. Wow! Nancy, LOVE the gold shade on Tidewater Elf and the beautiful poly It's Miller Time. Kate, your NOID is just spectacular! Comments (21)Well since I had some success posting the other day I thought I would try again . Not holding my breath though. I have a number of daylilies whose colors just dont fit into a nice and tidy color description . There is Trahlyta some days it is very purplish other days it is greyish Milk Chocolate which on some days is definitely chocolate but other days is irridescent and has sparkles on the petals and doesnt really look chocolate at all. Joseph's Coat is a gorgeous bloom with many many colors in it Joseph's Coat but dependent on the day the colors can change . Hard to believe the top 2 pictures above are the same plant . Pigment of Imagination , now there is a plant that defies description . When I first got it and it first bloomed , I thought I had the wrong plant . It looked nothing like the images I had seen and I was severely disappointed .......till later in the day I happened to pass by the spot where it is planted . I did a double take . There in front of me was a completely different plant , and on checking it again even later in the day , it looked entirely different again . Greyish pinkish blueish ....all describe the plant later in the day but in the morning it looks like a very unremarkable pinkish daylily. 6 years agoDavid, I would be interested in hearing how Wide Awake does for you. We have grown it for some time and it just doesn't want to grow for us. Also, I am blown away with the beauty of Wild Cherry Wine.
Wandering Werribee is relatively new to the garden but has already proved that it will be a great plant for us.
Weasel Teeth is also relatively new. I like the brown tones on this one.
Westbourne Great Balls of Fire has done well for us.
I am excited to see how Westbourne Frills and Thrill shapes up. The color of the eye is not as intense as I like, but the fanciness of the flower makes it a great addition to the breeding stock for yellows with red eyes. I was lucky enough to get this the season before Mary Jane Meadows passed. I wonder if anyone has taken over her intros or will they become rather scarce.
Westbourne Good Old Days is a nice bitone.
Westbourne Teresa Throwing Kisses is not very vigorous for us.
Where's Waldo is doing well.
Wickedly Wild and Wonderful doesn't really like our climate. It never gets as tall as its registered stats. It has, however, bloomed every year for us so we keep it because of the outstanding flowers.
Here's a picture of our Wide Awake. We just can't get this one to grow. We even bought the plant a second time and started over.
Wishful Dreaming was new last season. I hope the color improves.

6 years agoBob really likes Wispy Ray's colors.
Here's a close-up of a polytepal Wolverine and below is a normal one. This plant was a blooming machine last summer and set pods like crazy. I got 141 seeds from it.
Woodchopper's Ball was planted last spring.

Willow Dean Smith--a beauty
Welcome Mat--very good shorter grower, color richer than this
Now for the Westbournes:WB So Blue Without Teresa--love this small flower. Four seedlings should bloom this year from a cross of this one and Star Child, can hardly wait to see the babies.
WB On Cloud Nine--beautiful bitone
WB Oranges For Christmas--pretty burnt orange color
WB Butterfly Season--a blooming machine this year because it was moved to a different place.
WB Good Old Days-first WB purchased and a wonderful one. This is a proliferation that replaced our clump that was lost to moles.
WB Mom's Cinnamon Rolls--wonderful color, excellent flower.

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoLots of beautiful W's. Willow Dean Smith always catches my attention when posted. I really need to get to Rice's Thoroughbred Daylilies this summer for sure. It is less than an hour away, and there is another daylily place right by it, Antioch Daylily Gardens.
Wilson Spider, a reliable well-budded late.
Wind Frills, another reliable and very well-budded late
Webster's Pink Wonder, brought it home from Dick's last summer.
Westbourne Good Old Days is still relatively new; hopefully this summer it will bloom like crazy like everyone says it does.

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoI was just talking yesterday to someone about Wide Awake. So glad to get the input I needed from those who grow it here. Also talking about Westbourne daylilies. I was looking for W. Fireside Chat and noticed how few Westbournes were readily available. I hope someone picks up on her good daylilies and keeps them going. You have some nice ones now Avedon and Nancy........The only W that is readily available for show and tell is When Royals Dream. It was pretty blotchy last year after a great start the year before. They say it's winter hardy, so I'm hoping it pulled through this cold winter here in its pot......(which it doesn't look like it did).........Maryl

Works For Me --excellent Norris plant; earlier blooming. To my mind, superior to the Southern stuff in this color range, but of course, most of those don't grow well here.
We Are the Champions --later blooming; form can vary
Wall of Fire --superb this past year, with some rebloom. Could be splotchy in previous years
William Austin Norris --reliable older Salter
Wild Red Heart --reliable here, though blooms were just above the foliage in 2017
Winter Treasure --has never performed for me as it does for Julia

6 years agoWestbourne Good Old Days --striking, though pictures can exaggerate contrasts. Doesn't like afternoon sun.
Women Seeking Men --Amazonian. Good for landscape, but a space hog.
Wild Irish --nice color, but can be splotchy and not always perfect opening
Wolverine looked good this past year. Some pictures may exaggerate redness.
Woodside Romance --nice pink color, but for some reason I grew tired of it. I think I preferred a larger flower.
When You Get to Asheville --earned a place in the garden, but we will see whether it has the low bud count of some Selman cultivars.
Whistler's Sister --later blooming. Was nice in 2017, but a bit short.
Watermelon Moon --older Stamile, later blooming, still in garden.
Woodside Ruby --nice color if you like smaller flowers
Wild Mustang --short, but attracts attention.

WHALE TAILS - I've used this one in hybridizing A LOT and you do get lots of whale tail patterns.
WHEN MY SWEETHEART RETURNS - nice one from Apps that reblooms late.
WHITE CHOCOLATE - saw this in Margo's garden and had to order it. She and Jim produce too many really nice "whites" and one can only use to many whites in the garden.
WHITE FORMAL - Lenington 1965. Awful picture. Planted way over by the fence in the back yard and I've just never bothered to get rid of it ... I'll try to check to see if it is even there still. It did win lots of awards in its day.
WHITE STRIPE - reblooms here, not all foliage is variegated by any means - quite a whitish flower.
WHITE ON RICE - instant rebloom - not very white but very pretty

It was chosen for this kind of a scape because branching was one of my goals for a long time.
WILSON SPIDER - reblooms here and increases wonderfully. A great plant for donations to club plant sales every few years.
WIND FRILLS - I thought this was gone but I think I rescued a bit last fall from a peony that had taken it over.
WINE WITH EVERYTHING. I've had it about three years and last year it came into it's own - amazing in a dry season!
WISPY RAYS - unique and I won't be without it for a long time.
WITCH'S STICK - 5-6 wonderfully spaced branches with 30 buds. I don't think I've seen rebloom here.
WITH THIS RING - 5 BR, 25 buds, reblooms here
WOMEN SEEKING MEN
WREN'S SONG - reblooms here
