Bombay Silk did well. Registered as rose red. We are in need of a rose category.

Mantis - Sweet Prairie Wind is an unusual color. Mine had very short scapes this year.

Kay - I like your Green Octopus! There is plenty of green in the middle of that one! It reminds me of my Lime Peel.

Debra, I love the color of Tiffany Shade! Raspberry is such a nice color.

Judge Roy Bean is an unusual one. Registered as persimmon gold. Its also unusual is that the scapes are all different heights and flowers different sizes all at the same time/season.

Do the Twist is registered as pink violet with orange violet eye. Sometimes there is hits of orange in the pink-violet. It can vary. Love the color whatever it is!

Beryl Quinn is called dusty rose, but it various in shade and color to some degree. Unusual enough that it is one of the parents with Fiordiligi for my seedlings.

In the same vein as Mantis with the daylily Bombay Silk, here is Rose Masterpiece. I sent this daylily to a rose gardener friend of mine and she commented the color didn't look rose to her. It is a marvelous spring bloomer but what the actual color designation would be I don't know:

I did find a plant color chart from the Texas Aggies that helped me with my plum/mauve/lavender blends. It's a pretty basic color chart and, just now, looking at all the variations on the autumn leaves, I can say that nature is anything but basic with her combination of colors.......Maryl

It's Mint Octopus. Kay, you could have listed Catastrophe Waitress, certainly a hard-to-describe color.

Kingdom Without End was very good this year. I think all of Emmerich's cranberry purple blends are hard to fit into a category.

Brad - Do the Twist is one with colors that really fit in this category. I like it!

Tall Dark Stranger made the list for me. It’s is registered as royal purple. It only bloomed purple for me one day early in It’s season. The rest of the blooms looked like the second photo, I liked it both colors. It would be great in Celeste's garden

Sherry - I really like your photo of Storm Shelter. I bought that one after seeing your photo last summer. I'm anxious to see what it looks like here.

Rose Masterpiece, Tully Mars and Roses for Dallas...….WOW! Gorgeous.

Sherry, I had asked Laura for Tall Dark Stranger for the fall but when I injured myself I had to postpone getting it. I plan on getting it in the future. It has me intrigued.

Here are some daylilies whose colors are hard to describe, but which also do very well in my garden.

PERSIAN RUBY

It is listed as ruby red but it is always a combo of red/ black/purple in my garden. It is NEVER ruby red here. The cooler the temps the darker it is. What a great performing daylily and really magnificent looking.

The color is described as 'claret' so it doesn't fit into the regular color categories. This one has incredible color that has to be seen in person to really appreciate it fully. Another daylily that is an incredible performer, right into the late season. It really stands out!

RASPBERRY SUEDE

The color is classified as 'black raspberry' which I didn't know was an actual color.

This is a tremendous performer in my garden.....a robust plant which always puts up tons of scapes and blooms. The color is incredible.

GOLLIWOG

Listed as a 'pink' but it is actually a pale blend of cream, pink, and yellow. Another great daylily for me.

An older one but always a good one here. It's considered black-red. It is incredibly dark. Sometimes it looks black-red and other times, black-purple. The red eye really pops.

Kind of an unusual flower and not to everyone's liking, it is called a tan brown blend. But it has purple veining so that makes it hard to classify.

This is another oddball daylily. It can be a lighter purple or it can be so dark it looks pitch black. Classified as a black-purple.

New for me in 2018, I don't really know what color this is. It is listed on the data base as deep wine with black veins. That seems to fit.

ABBA

I have pictures of it looking rose-red and then others where it appears purple. Often it is a combo of both rose-red and purple so who knows?

Sometimes it's brown, sometimes it's purple. It changes constantly for me.

Nowhere to Hide certainly fits this category. Storm Shelter had a terrible year this past year. Short scapes and low bud count. There might be a dark category apart from purples. There is an eyed category coming up, I see.

I was just going to ask Debra where her Teddy Bear's Picnic was. It's always intrigued me. That one epitomizes the multiple odd colors theme. That's a really good picture of it Celeste. The smokey overlay is so unusual. Debra says it looses it as the day progresses in her climate. Smokey Mountain Autumn would be another in this catagory. I'd have to dig up pictures of mine and I don't have time just now...........Maryl

Maryl - I don't think I got a good photo of Teddy Bear's Picnic last season. It did not bloom well as it's in too much shade now. Each year I have less and less space to grow daylilies because of shade encroachment.

I have struggled with this category, because I prefer colors I can describe, but I did find a few.

LIKE A SHEPHERD: I am not sure how to describe the color, but I like the plant, and bloom.

SUBLIMINAL CALLIGRAPHY: I think I posted this under the melon thread, because I thought that it fit. This photo was taken in the pm. In the morning, the pink midrib is more prominent and the petals are orange/salmon with a raspberry eye. An unusual color combination. It is always loaded with buds.

I will throw TUSCAWILLA BLACKOUT into this category. It can look rose purple black. It really depends on the lighting and time of day. This is last year's photo.

I would also agree with the comments about TEDDY BEAR'S PICNIC being difficult to describe.

Subliminal Calligraphy is similar to Inca Apothecary in color uniqueness. The latter did not perform that well this past year; at least, I didn't get a picture.

Wow. lots to like here and you are such enablers! I especially like Lime Peel [it's going on my list], Persian Ruby, Pinhill Claret Symphony [both have been on my list], Raspberry Suede, and Rose Masterpiece.

I'll just post these three. One is a NOID from lilykate that I'm pretty well decided is Matthew Martin. As this was it's first appearance after being planted this spring, it's uncertain what it may look like in the future, but here are two different looks:

Jungle Beauty, which I'm not sure what you'd call it, but it had strength, height and bloomed very well:

And, lastly, one of my first set of seedlings that I'll keep because I might want to work with it still. I like the angularity and the velvety- looking petals. And there's an eye in there that could be worked on:

Well since I had some success posting the other day I thought I would try again . Not holding my breath though.

I have a number of daylilies whose colors just dont fit into a nice and tidy color description . There is Trahlyta some days it is very purplish other days it is greyish

which on some days is definitely chocolate but other days is irridescent and has sparkles on the petals and doesnt really look chocolate at all. Joseph's Coat is a gorgeous bloom with many many colors in it

but dependent on the day the colors can change . Hard to believe the top 2 pictures above are the same plant .

Pigment of Imagination ,

now there is a plant that defies description . When I first got it and it first bloomed , I thought I had the wrong plant . It looked nothing like the images I had seen and I was severely disappointed .......till later in the day I happened to pass by the spot where it is planted . I did a double take . There in front of me was a completely different plant , and on checking it again even later in the day , it looked entirely different again . Greyish pinkish blueish ....all describe the plant later in the day but in the morning it looks like a very unremarkable pinkish daylily.

I have many many more daylilies like this as this is the kind of thing that attracts me to a particular daylily . Something unusual , out of the ordinary.

Simmering Elephants is another odd ball colored daylily not really pink, not really mauve, not really brown ......

This is Chocolate Dude which is sometimes brown but many times more mauvy color and then there is always this effect which really I cant even come up with a name for this color

Spicecake is another that changes color dependent on temps/humidity etc . Some days it is very brown other days like the image below

Signet - next summer could you mail me a letter and sprinkle some of the pollen from Chocolate Dude in it? Hee hee

Heather - I was kidding, of course, but now having said it, it sounds like an interesting experiment. Some how I don't think anyone would really notice a little pollen thrown loose in an envelope, though maybe it would stain the paper and look suspicious? Surely not if it's only what would come off an anther or two. And a colored envelope might mask the appearance of a stain. As to whether it would survive the journey, that's the real question, isn't it? I suppose it would depend on the heat, as you say. We're fairly close distance-wise, so transit time wouldn't be more than 2-3 days, but there's no controlling where the letter would be stored on the way. Ah, well - just dreaming while the snow flies. :)
