Daylily Colors That Defy Description 2021
This category covers unusual color blends, daylilies that look a different color than their registered description in your garden, or daylilies that show different colors depending on temperature. The next category will be Bitones and Bicolors on Monday.
Curt Hanson seems to produce a lot of unusual color blends. Allegheny Skyline is one of his that varies quite a bit in color - sometimes looking lavender and sometimes a reddish pink. He registered it as Cashmere Rose in color. Here are a couple of looks that it had this season. Notice how different the watermark colors are, as well as the petal color.
Hanson's Two Sues is another with an unusual blend of colors. He calls it a bronze rose.
His Tiffany Shade is another unsual blend, registered as raspberry rose. Here it actually looks that shade.
But most times when I look at it, I can't decide whether it's pink or lavender.

Blood of the Martyrs is registered as a black cranberry, but it mostly looks purple or red in my garden. The blackness must be due to the temps in Emmerich's garden.

I'm not quite sure what color this is.
Not quite red, not quite purple.....but VERY dark. Maybe wine-colored?NOWHERE TO HIDE....a strange color and veined. Registered as a tan-brown blend
GREEN ICONYes, it is mostly green....but there are hints of white and even cream
PERSIAN RUBYCan be more on the reddish-side or often nearly black/purple
TALL DARK STRANGERWe've seen this one posted before, in varying color schemes. This is what color mine chooses:
HOUZZ is giving me a hard time right now.....I keep posting and losing photos. Will keep trying later!

This is a marvelous daylily, tall and a quick multiplier.
Woman at the Well is registered as apricot. I see yellow. This one opens well despite the ruffling.Sherry

Comments (13)Nice daylilies! I really like all of them. Upgrade is lovely! I really like its eye. Ultimate Illusion is a very interesting pattern. Would you say it has an eye and a watermark? I also love the white edge on the sepals. Umbrella Cockatoo is a plant that grows well here. Una de Gato bloomed for the first time last season. We like it! In case you are trying to translate the name, the n in una should have a tilde over it. Unending Melody is a nice little flower, but I have had no luck in trying to breed with it so it will be going this spring. Sometimes we just decide that there are better similar ones to use. For example, instead of using this one, I would rather use Sam Abell (similar color, but better edge) or Empire of Dawn and Dusk (more white petal color). As you might imagine, Unforgettable Fire is one of Bob's favorites. We first saw this one in a daylily nursery about 20 miles north of us (the nursery is now closed), The owner said it was a slow grower and she had none to sell. Bob tracked it down on the internet (the internet with all its faults makes buying rare plants a lot easier) and found a lady in New York who sold him a piece. It's a great grower and increaser for us. Unstoppable is a nice daylily. It's not always this dark red. Most of the time it's a bright red. This picture was taken during some cool weather. Bob mentioned that we should get rid of Untangle My Emotions, but I am just reluctant to. It is shorter than we like and we don't breed with it anymore. I am sentimentally attached to it though. When we first started buying daylilies, the addiction hadn't taken hold yet and we didn't spend much on any one daylily. Consequently, our collection was comprised of older varieties. This one was sent as a bonus and I was thrilled. It was the newest daylily we had in the garden. It was just one tiny fan and it didn't bloom for two years but I was happy. Comments (16)Debra, WOW Wow! on that first seedling!! Amazing looking flower. Congratulations on some nice seedlings. Nancy, I like your Ruffled Strawberry Parfait x Extreme Tangerine seedling. It is very eye-catching! As for me, toothies are just coming into favor with me. At first I was undecided if I liked them or not but they grew on me. Now I like them quite a lot and the few I acquired this year came late and did not bloom for me because they came from a warmer climate where they had already bloomed. I'm looking forward to next year to see what they will do. 2 years agoI like this category! Allegheny Skyline haszero os been on my want list for a long long time. So beautiful. I also like Two Sues, Tiffany Shade, and Blood of the Martyrs. You pushed my button on these, Debra. Celeste and Sherry, Tall Dark Stranger is also beautiful! I also like Green Icon and Pistachio Moon.
Judge Roy Bean is sort of copper and brown and orange.
this seedling is also hard to classify.
VT RR Red is sometimes reddish, sometimes orangeish [like here].
Erin Farmer looks fuchsia pink here but sometimes is melon or peach or lighter pink.
I think that's all for me.

2 years agoI don’t have a lot of these but the ones I do are special!
One year this bloomed and I was thrilled because I had not seen it before!! I sent some to Celeste and did some research in my notes and found it to probably be True Gertrude Demerest by placement but not looks.
The following years it has never shown that white again but does have a myriad of colors
Substantial Evidence-first year bloom last year-I loved it (yellow!!!)
This year this was the bloom. This one is all over the place in the database
Sorry-horrible photo but this is a noid with lovely color
That every so often throws broken colors like this!

2 years agoI have always wondered why these two are described as orchid with a plum violet eye. In our garden, the base color has always been soft orange or melon.

Amanda's French Toast is described as sienna red but it looks burnt orange to me.
