Early blooms 2024

Some of my daffodils are blooming now, many are developing buds. After seeing Mantis‘s photos I realized some anemone found the way to my garden last season….no guess from where.

I am guessing these daffodils have been in my garden for over 15 years. They had peach centers and are now yellow, mother nature at work.

The newest addition will be here in two weeks, this is Charlie.

No- it isn't normal- if you keep them cleaned up & dead-headed they'll bloom until frost no matter when they start. It might help to give a boost of garden fertilizer in July to give them more energy to keep on going. We use 10-20-20 at planting and again in July to spruce them up for shows in August.

Tall, early bloomer to pair with late blooming datura

I have a section of my garden where I plant a Moonflower and a Devil's Trump near one another, like so: That pic is last year. This year I'm reversing it, with the Moonflower in the front and the taller Devil's Trumpet in the back. You also see an elephant ear to the rear left, and canna lilies to the rear right. Farther to the right, off camera, is a roseum elegans rhododendron. In front of them, also off camera, are irises, black eyed susans, crocosmia, and a birdbath that I use as a planter. These plants are quite large, the Moonflower can easily get to be 6' wide! They're self-seeding annuals, they start to come up in May, and they bloom late July through September. This means that I have a pretty large section of garden that's mostly empty through Spring and early Summer! You can kind of see that I have Purple Heart setcreasea underneath the Devil's Trumpet, which does help to fill in but it' not ideal. Since this is farther back in the garden you don't really see the short setcreasea unless you walk back there. Any other suggestions for something that I could plant in this same area that would look good while waiting on the datura to bloom? It would need to be around 3-4' tall, go away (or mostly go away) by late July, and be sparse enough that the datura seeds could grow up through it and around it.

Kate, thanks for asking I’m doing well, working on increasing my stamina. Had a problem with anemia last month….looks like the result of taking low dose aspirin for years. I got a transfusion but feeling soooo much better. we worked for several hours in the backyard today……I needed a few extra rest periods ; ). Sherry

Mantis - Tart With a Heart does seem tender based on how it performed after the deep freeze weather events. Moon Shimmers did not seem to mind the weather swings as much. I went on a Salter buying spree after Jeff died. I've been fairly happy with those two and Sensational Heart. Kate - I do know you've always liked that Karelia seedling. The later blooming scapes are taller and better budded than ever. I think I have one scape that is 27 or 28 inches with 19 buds this time. So its stats have improved. Moon Shimmers does have a fantastic edge, but unless its very hot that edge can cause the blooms to have weird shapes. That's why I haven't posted a photograph of it until now. Also I have trouble getting the right color on that one. It's more yellow than my photo shows. Orchid Linen is short and prone to thrips, but on the rare occasions when it has a clean bloom, its a gorgeous one. Maryl - I bought Moon Shimmers for that edge, and I have crossed it with my light yellow seedling. I'm hoping for some pretty edges on the babies. Charlie is so adorable! I love the hellebore. Mine is a dark one and doesn't make as much impact in the garden. I love the daffodils. We have quite a few blooming here now too.

Here is a photo of our hellebore. Please pardon my hand but I can't take a photo of the face of the flower without turning it upward.

Here are a few daffodils blooming out front of the house. I believe it is the variety Jetfire.

The iris reticulata are finished for the year, but they were quite nice.

Charlie is six weeks old now. We bring him home at 8 weeks, AKC regulations say a puppy needs to be weaned and 8 weeks old. We lost 3 dogs the past 2 1/2 years, the last one in December. The dog we have now is used to being in a pack, she misses her brother.

I probably should know, but what breed is Charlie? He has quite the adorable puppy mug. I'm sorry you lost so many companions in the last few years. What fun you will have training a new puppy though............I really like all your winter bulbs. The double Hellebores are especially nice. I have one Hellebore, but I seldom think to look at it. I'll get out there tomorrow to see if it's blooming now that I've seen yours.........Maryl
