Stacked large square tiles

Hi all, now planning my ensuite. Looking at larger limestone tiles. My tile guy is saying that large square ones are what is in style. And stacked. I’m looking for a beachy, or farmhouse style. This just seems so modern! More clean line looking and I’m struggling to know if it will look good and not prison like, though I do like the limestone. The shower is 6’5” x 4’, so quite big, and no door. The faucet will be close to the back wall to avoid spray coming out. We are using hardwood in the bath and a navy cabinet. Any ideas would be appreciated! I was so certain of what I wanted in the kitchen, (not that I didn’t ask plenty of questions here!!) but I’m fairly muddled in the ensuite. Any thoughts?

I would not ever use limestone in a bath. It’s softer and more porous than marble. Marble is metamorphosised limestone. Use a porcelain look alike if you are in love. It will need to be a perfectly flat, perfectly supported, large room for 24x24 to be scale appropriate.

The cabinets are awfully dark for one of the smallest rooms in the house.

Thanks everyone. I'm interested in opinions on aesthetics only: I can't picture whether square or rectangles on the floor will look better with 3x6 rectangles on the tub surround. Floor will be light or medium gray; wall subway glossy white (Arctic White Daltile). (I'm all over the DCOF and COF. DS is disabled; we only buy ADA rated for floor. Tub, no shower floor in this bath. Plenty of friends have 12"x24" in their kids' bathroom floors so I'm confident I can find one rated for this use.)

This thread is acting weird... I posted right after the OP submitted, and it is now not here. I posted that in the high end homes I see, if the tile is larger than normal, and there is plenty of space, the stacked looks fine. If the tile is more of the normal size, then I see them laying it out the traditional way. This holds true for both back splashes and floors.

What I have seen lately in higher end homes is that the tiles are stacked if they are large and offset if they are of a normal, or smaller size. This is true for back splashes and bathroom floors.

I think you can do better while maintaining the color scheme and beachy feel you like. A stacked subway tile would look modern. You could go with a larger format subway (just not quite as large as what you have pictured.)

An off center shower head would irritate my innate desire for symmetry very quickly.

Besides, if you install your shower head closer to the back wall of the shower, you'll end up needing to aim it forward, making the water more likely to end up on the floor outside the shower stall. Installed in the center of the 4' depth of the shower stall, you could aim the shower head and water straight toward the opposite wall. (You might also consider one of the overhead showerheads (not something I'd do.)

In a small room, dark colors can give the feel of a cave. White fixtures and pastel shades are a better idea.

You might consider using navy blue tiles as a row of trim tiles rather than your vanity color, especially if your other tiles are to be a beach blue.

You could also add some darker blue in your light shade

No law says you have to stack the tile. Not unless you want a very contemporary feel vs. your farmhouse.............

Go with what YOU like, not what your tile guy says is in style! Our builder tried to steer us with design choices and I’m so glad I stuck to (most of) my guns. Also trends are fleeting- classic choices are timeless.

I second Sophie's concerns on limestone. I liked the look of stone in my bathroom, but didn't want the tile absorbing water and requiring a lot of maintenance. Maybe a tile like the one below would be right for you?

Your tile guy wants easy and IMO square tiles are not it at all . I like 12 x24 porcelain tile stacked if contemporary or 1/3 stagger if not. I agree limestone is not a good choice for bathrooms and either is hardwood with a shower with no door. You will need to put some form of glass panel on that shower or you will have water all over the place.I like to use the same tile on the floor and the shower walls for a nice clean look and you can add an accent if you want.

Oh sorry folks, I should have said it “looks” like limestone. It’s porcelain though.

We had the same size in our last house and it worked great without the door. No spill over at all.

You could look for longer plank tiles in white or even a wood look and make the shower look like ship lap.... that would be a nice look especially with the navy vanity...

Never bow to the "that's what everyone is doing" statement ....
