Is it ok to cut a granite countertop after installation?
Comments (13)I am a fabricator. catheliz - you are right in expecting the 2 corners to be the same. this is a mistake by the fabricator and they seem to be acknowledging it. it's an easy mistake to make. we've done it ourselves. A good fabricator can turn the radiused corner into a 90 degree inside corner. if the edge has a complex shape like Ogee or FV30 it would take an exceptionally good fabricator to make the corner look right. if it a shape like a flat or simple radius then it's very do-able. there will be dust and water but if the fabricator takes adequate care the mess should be contained to a very small area. my 2 cents....See MoreGranite Cracked/Broken By Granite Guy During Install of Cooktop
Comments (17)Well, to put another opinion in to the mix---I don't know of any granite fabricators in my neck of the woods who will do a cutout on an already existing installed countertop that another fabricator has installed. Yes, you can get them to come out and drill holes, or modify cutouts in place, but there will be NO WARRANTY about the top cracking and you would have to sign a waiver acknowledging that fact. In an existing situation, the house can have settled, the cabinets settled, and there can be invisible stresses on the granite top if that's happened, and then you apply cutting tools to the situation and you have a stress crack manifest itself. Not to mention, your "pinch hitters" didn't help select the slab or layout, and the original fabricator may have installed a piece with a fissure there that just naturally broke when the larger cutout stresses were applied with the bigger and heavier cooktop. There are a lot of reasons granite cracks, but in an existing situation that is being modified, you really can't hold the fabricators responsible. Now, they should have made you aware of this on the front end, had you sign a waiver, and shown you the issue and let you sign off on the repair efforts before they left. I'm not defending that behavior at all....See MoreHelp, my countertops were installed with a rounded corner instead of !
Comments (65)I have been told by appliance sales staff that an exhaust hood is required for a gas range with burners above a certain output but none of them has been able to tell me where that regulation can be found. Section M1503 "Range Hoods" in Chapter 15 "EXHAUST SYSTEMS" of the 2015 IRC does not require an exhaust for a range but it does regulate the fan speed, duct design, discharge location, etc. IF someone chooses to install one. I suspect some people may have misinterpreted those regulations as requiring the exhaust system described. At any rate, a range exhaust is not a fuel-burning gas appliance "vent". Gas appliance vents are regulated by the IRC in Chapter 18, CHIMNEY and VENTS and require compliance with the manufacturer's installation instructions. I have yet to find a range that was required to have a ducted gas vent but I guess its possible....See MoreNew Black Granite Counter Tops -- Stains!
Comments (1)Take an exact picture with dimensions, then visit your fabricator's shop. A hundred bucks says your waffles match his vacuum pods, used to secure stone while fabricating on a CNC machine, exactly. Looks like a Morbidelli to me....See MoreSina Sadeddin Architectural Design
