Quilting Design Dilemma

furniture wood? + wall paint color suggestions

I have been given a dresser (with mirror) and a chest. I have an empty room and plan to put the furniture in there. Can anyone tell me the wood type used in these pieces? The room where they are going has a hardwood floor. The floor has wear and tear but it won't be refinished or gutted anytime soon so it stays as is for now. I'm not sure if I will refinish the furniture but if I do, I want to keep the original color but change the hardware. What wall paint color would fit well with the furniture and floor?

I have included a (not good) pic of the floor....floor is lighter. The 'true' furniture color is seen best in the first photo.

Any input about furniture/wall color is appreciated.

I’m not an expert by any means, but the lovely dresser looks like maple to me. You could take a drawer to a furniture refinisher and he could probably tell you what it is.

My oak floors are 63 years old. They are beautiful, too.

Are they perfect; no! Are they scarred; yes! Scuffed; yes! Worn and lived in? Yes!

They have a patina that cannot be duplicated except with 63 years of wear and tear.

I sweep them with a broom, or vacuum them, and occasionally mop them with vinegar and water. NO Scott’s Liquid Gold; no “wood cleaners.” My dogs do not wear rubber nail covers, and the neighbor’s kid can play trucks on them anytime he wishes.

I love my floors; they are nice enough for the Queen to visit. I know she is used to a bit of dog hair!

Enjoy your lovely room and furnishings. As for paint, I’m partial to greens of all shades and all the rich jewel-toned colors myself.

I know I am the only non-grey person living, but if I see yet another room with grey walls, grey ceiling, grey upholstery, grey rugs, maybe an oversized brown chair, white trim and the “amazing ‘pop’ of electric blue” I think I’ll scream - but that’s just me!

There are many options here. I would use a soft warm color. White, cream, sage, peach, grey. What colors do you like?

I seem to change color preference with rooms. All my bedrooms are different colors...one is off-white, one is purple, and one is gold. The different colors never bothered me because the rooms are self-contained and doors are always closed during daylight hours. My living room, kitchen, dining area is the same color...revere pewter but looks more biege than gray. The bathroom is a sea green.

I know this sounds odd, but I would remove the final pointy ends from the posts on the bed, as on your first inspiration photo. To me it looks very odd. I would definitely do simple curtain panels reaching to the floor and also a rug to give some softness to this room with so much wood. Perhaps very light blue walls with a green and cream bedspread and cream curtains.

IMO you have enough gray if you look at the previous owners furniture that green color looks awesome with those floors so I would do a very soft gray/ green it will look good with the floors and not be a big gray box. I would suggest some more grown up art on the walls and save those for a diffent space and make sure when you hang the new art it is hung so the center of the work is at eye level which is usually about 65”

Some people like dark colors in bedrooms because they think it makes the room cozy. Others find dark colors to be oppressive or depressing. Neither person is right or wrong. The reason there are hundreds of different paint colors is because not everyone likes the same thing. The color the room is currently is similar to the color my bedroom is now, so I don't see anything wrong with it. But if you are tired of it and want to change it then by all means, change it. Paint is cheap when you DIY. However, I agree with the other commenters who said that instead of installing a feature wall you should invest in new bedding, lighting, a rug and possibly furniture. Your room is small relative to the rooms pictured in the inspiration pictures by the commenters, but if you have quality furnishings it could be quite lovely. Keep comfort and function in mind when deciding how to proceed.

You probably don't want to hear this, but the flooring is the biggest problem with the space. I would bet that the cabinets were a natural stained wood that the previous owners painted white to attract buyers. Ditto the gray walls. There's no contrast at all in the room except for the yellow-ish granite, which makes for a bland room. Live in the space for a few months at least before you do anything. Make sure that the layout and appliances work for you--that's the biggest factor in a successful kitchen. If it does, then either paint the cabinets a contrasting color (green/blue) OR replace the floor with a medium toned brown wood. In either case, I'd replace the spotty granite with a subtle light or dark stone or butcher block. If the layout doesn't work, then you have a larger project on your hands. Get a good kitchen designer to work out a good layout and then concentrate on the finishes.

caroline....I feel the same way about wood floors. I seldom wash them, just sweep/vacuum. My floors are about 30 years old so you have me beat there but they have seen years of dogs, cats, toys, children and adults. Now it's only 2 adults.

I am going to change the kitchen wood floor b/c of water damage but the other floors may well outlive me.

I had a new bedroom set for my empty room but sold it. Had it less than a year.......very poor quality although it cost lots of $$$$.

I would not touch the floor or the furniture's color or finish, it's beautiful. I love the misty silver/grey/blue wall colors, I have it throughout my house but that's my own personal taste. In fact it's almost exactly the same as the Gray Wisp above.

I also would not change the hardware on that chest of drawers. Soon it will be an antique but by removing the original and distinctive hardware it will lose a lot of value.

Most grays feel cold to me so I would use a light warm color on the walls.

I agree about keeping the hardware. IF you really dislike it and can find handles that are the same size & use the same screw, save the original in a safe spot. Make sure it is well labeled and that you saved it for it's value as original hardware .

I wouldn't choose a paint color until the bedding is chosen, that's a more important match than wood furniture & floors. Leave both as is they are beautiful

I think that if you keep the furniture and floor color as they are, a pale blue on the walls would be really pretty. I wouldn't fool with the furniture. It's unique and looks to be in good condition as is. There is a floor restore stuff you can buy to apply to hardwood floors that is pretty easy to use and restores some of the sheen. You can buy it anywhere, Walmart, Lowe's...
