(Insert Vegetable) Is The New Kale
Comments (55)That looks really good. Not had samphire. I had to look it up. Poor mans asparagus. And can be grown as a plant. Seaweed salads have been around for some time in Japanese restaurants. I always have a bag of Dulce on hand from Maine and coastal Canada. (pronounced like 'pulse'). I like it raw, in stir-fry, in seafood chowders, tuna salad. Dulce is said to be the next kale. I doubt that. I looked up the 'next big thing in foods for 2016' and not much stands out. It seems to take a while for large market growers to switch their harvest methods to produce enough to reach groceries. By that time it is so dilute and lacks the flavor of home gardens. Greenhouse grown heavily fed to grow fast enough for profit and not that fresh....like mesclun salad mix in bags. Dry lawn clippings have more flavor. At least the focus is on healthy greens and veggies. Fresh and full of flavor. Sprouted grains and beans. I've added a few new varieties to my micro green 'forest'. 7-10 days grow time. 5 5x7 trays going all winter in succession. One large 7x12 tray for a spicy mix. I'm sure that one is soon to appear in stores. Needs to be cut fresh so i'm guessing they will sell it live in clamshells. One fat cut harvest cost about 15cents home grown. The same seeds i buy in bulk i use in the garden salad bed for a larger crop....See MoreWhat's For Dinner #380
Comments (107)@walnutcreek, here is the pullman loaf recipe I use, HERE. I printed out a hard copy and crossed out the honey. I add two heaping tBsp powdered milk to the warm water. Butter needs to be soft room temp, not melted. I don't stock so many different flours, especially now. But do have regular whole wheat in the freezer for the 1/2 cup. (the butter and milk adds just the right sweetness for us.) Next loaf will be a entirely new flour I've never used, but I have 25 lbs. Yikes. Hope we like it....See MoreAre you stocking up on spices
Comments (12)We all went throught this together in the Spring of 2020. TP, Four, yeast, etc. I don't see similar in the perceivable future, but if something is important to your holidays, i would purchase ahead now. Even pre-covid, if i hesitated on cranberries, i might find myself scrambling. Buy them when i see them and freeze. I just ordered nuts and seed for the entire winter and grains and rice. Flour is in the freezer in zip-locks in freezer portioned for two big boules each. 6 bags. A couple pounds of oats, and cornmeal/corn flour. I have a couple pounds of good butter in the freezer but don't use that much. Nice to have it when i need it. We use alot of miso and chili oil/crisp. I've stocked miso for 20+ years and ran out a few weeks ago. Lets hope that the original 2020 supply chain/hoarding is a distant memory....See MoreHave you made anything NEW lately?
Comments (42)The chicken and ricotta meatballs were really good and DH heartily approved. I did make a couple of changes (of course I did, you know me :-D). Here's the recipe for those interested: https://www.taste.com.au/recipes/17-minute-chicken-ricotta-meatballs-recipe/w8chqy08?r=recipes/dtivoxmz The changes- I used pork mince instead of chicken- I've made a similar recipe in the past which uses pork mince. Shops where I live don't carry chicken mince and the pork mince was cheaper than mincing my own chicken by about 2/3 the price as well. I also added half as much again risoni as the amount in the recipe seemed not very much, and added half as much again broth (I used vegetable broth as that's what was in the cupboard waiting to be used up)....See More- 8 years ago
