That's a problem on what you've done there. Instead of asking why, since it's already done, I would do one of two things: 1) I would get the current granite knowing that it won't be a perfect match, and then I would hang some thing decorative over it to hide most of it and distract your eye to look at something else, or 2) it looks like those are tiles of granite and not one whole piece, so I would remove the tiles in the back splash behind the stove and re-tile the entire area with something else that is different enough to show that you are not trying to match it.

agree with cpaul1's second option - but I would use a black tile in that spot, the whole area behind the stovetop.

It's such an out-of-the-way area that almost anything would work just fine. If you can't find matching granite or tile, use granite or tile in a complimentary color. 30" stainless steel panels are cheap and would probably slip right into place.

what ever you put there, on top of the granite splash, is going to look out of place.

save your money and rip out all of that backsplash and do something different.

Or, rip out that portion behind the stove and redo it w/the same 12x12 granite tiles.

or, cut out the portion directly behind the stove and replace w/a solid SS piece.

ya know, you can find pre fab granite countertops and have them installed for about 1200 or so,,, really would be so much better than those tiles. then you could do an inexpensive tile backsplash.

look for a remnant piece for that island. it's small enough to find one on the cheap.

Thank you everyone for your ideas. Taking out the existing granite isn't an option since we plan kitchen remodel eventually.

Get rid of the black hole of the full height splash. Period. No matter what, all of that black hole needs to go. Everywhere. Then put a much lighter tiled splash in.

I was told that it wouldn't be possible to just rip out just that section of granite? It would damage the granite on both sides of the area creating another problem. Looking for a solution not another problem. Even if it isn't perfect.

Do consider replacing it all. At least that entire stretch if not the whole kitchen; it would look best and not cost much more either

All of the splash. Not just behind the cooktop. All of that black hole has to go.
