Laundry Room Before & After

Laundry Room Dilemma

I'm not even sure what our options are as our laundry room sits in the middle of the "mechanical" room with the furnace, hot water heater, and all the piping that goes with it. Can I get some suggestions please on how to make this into a nice, full laundry room?

1. Do you have a sink down there? It would be nice to have one in that counter possibly.
1. Another thought would be to move the washer next to the dryer.
1. Paint the cupboards, maybe take the doors off a few of the lowers to house laundry baskets.
1. Can you paint that PVC pipe? I have no idea if that is possible or even recommended.
1. Is your ironing board in the tall cabinet? can you rig a place for the iron too, to get it off the counter.
1. Do you have shut off valves for the washer, and are they easily accessible. Is the dryer gas or electric?
1. Is the dryer vent easy to access for cleaning. If it was me, I'd have ridged ducting instead of the flex, as I believe the air flow is more efficient.
1. Some sort of drying or hanging rack or rod.

One of the greatest things you could do is install a couple LED florescent lights in there so you have more lite, it looks quote dark currently. You could also paint the rafters white. Maybe add a couple rugs, and paint the cabinets a nice white?

I agree it depends on the market and your neighborhood. I will say that there's a lot more interest in functional and attractive laundry rooms these days. I'm an architect and I do high-end new builds. renovations, and additions. Over the past several years, everyone wants laundry in a convenient and pleasant space, and some people really want to trick it out and make it fancy. In fact, I started joking that "Laundries are becoming the new kitchens." If it becomes a multi-functional space that helps the rest of the house work, then it's an improvement. Talk to a couple of realtors, and try asking around locally--neighbors and people you think would want to live in your area. Too many people feel bound by the mythical whims of the real estate market. If you were talking about replacing a bedroom with a merry-go-round, or a walk-in humidor, I'd say that's a bad idea. But everyone does laundry, right? Laundry has come up out of the cellar. Machines are quieter and more attractive than they used to be. Some don't require venting, and some even have built-in flood protection. Those horrible closets that cheap developers put into their spec houses are almost as bad as the cellar laundry. If it's a trend to put laundry into a more accessible and spacious part of the house, then I say it's a trend worth watching. That fourth bedroom might only be used while kids are at home. Laundry is forever ;-) Also, agree with Annette. Post a plan, please!

Thank you all so much!! I love your vintage metal detergent sign. The chair is in the room so I can use it when I’m sewing. The cabinet doors open, so there’s plenty of space for my legs. Other than that, I don’t need a rod for hanging clothes. I don’t like to see laundry baskets, so would not add them to this space. I love your question about what make me go “wow!” I like nature (plants, flowers & birds particularly). Carefully chosen decor and well thought out color schemes that are traditional or transitional and harmonious me feel at peace. I really want to put something on the empty wall space, but do not want to clutter it with a bunch of small laundry signs.

This is a man’s perspective: it would be criminal to paint nice stained wood like that. Paint will flake, chip, etc over time. I would update cabinets, reorganize the workspace. Maybe add a wall to close off the water heater and furnace, but then you lose some space. You have room for multiple laundry carts. I wish we had that much space!

That is a nice spacious work area. I agree with the others... I would go for an industrial look (you kind of have that going on now). You could paint the PVC pipes different colors (like bright primary) and the wall. I think bright colored bins and racks would be both functional and decorative. You could have a drop down folding table or slide out. I might suggest checking out The Container Store or a teacher supply. Good luck. We all need welcoming surroundings for the never ending laundry tasks.
