Need shower niche advice - anyone have a glass shelf installed?
Comments (22)I still have time to change this plan, and order a marble shelf to go in. How would this be done? The bottom tiles would be set, and then the shelf gets set on the top edge of the installed tiles. The top tiles then get cut to take into account the thickness of the stone and still keep alignment with the tiles on either side, and then they get installed. As for objecting to installing on top of the tile, yes and no. ANY kind of intrusion through the tile and waterproofing is cause for concern. But that can also be alleviated if it's "corked" back up with caulking. This one below, I'm showing you the unfinished pictures so you can see how it's done with the stone sitting on the tile's edges:...See MoreConflicting Contractors: how to anchor a shower niche shelf
Comments (15)Tundra, can you describe the silicone method? Is the product the same as 100% silicone caulk, or something else? It seems like silicone caulk might be too flexible to hold a heavy quartz shelf? For epoxy, would we need to cut grooves, or can we simply epoxy the quartz shelf to the raw tile surface since it won't really be load bearing? The biscuit-type method sounds great, but might be over the heads of our quartz and tile guys, who seem to like simple solutions... any advice on what type of contractor we could call who might have the experience and tools for the biscuit job (or for cutting a groove if that is necessary? Comments (4)Where is it in the shower (pic from further back would help)? Is the stain the length of the tile? Only one corner? What kind of tile? What is the substrate behind the tile? What is the waterproofing? How was the tile set/installed?...See MoreSteve J
