Stone veneer to spruce up exposed foundation walls?
Comments (8)I agree that the 50s look was all about modern and also that the concrete isn't unattractive. However, there are veneers out there with modern appearances if you want to change the look. You don't have to go with something like flagstone. I don't suggest a natural stone, either. I live in clay/quarry country and it's a common product and there are several outlets for it in our little community. My husband and daughter have done a lot of natural stone work outside on our grounds, but when we wanted a product to use on our house, itself the salesman at the quarry suggested a manufactured veneer. It's made of concrete and has a lighter weight, but looks so natural you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference. It not only comes in stone, but brick, and very decorative concrete block styles suitable for a house in your style. Comments (14)Around here, the only summer “cottages” with stone or brick work are actually lakeside mansions. The actual cottage sized summer places like yours are clapboard or shingled with the only masonry being perhaps a brick chimney. So I think adding stone or brick would actually make it look more suburban and reduce the cottage vibe. Landscaping shouldn’t be fussy, with a tree off each side of the house to frame it from the road side. Beds in front should be at least 5’-6’ deep with either undyed mulch or a groundcover dense enough to suppress weeds. There should be only a very few types of relatively easy care plants such as shrubs that flower during the time you will be visiting, unless you plan to live here for long periods of time in the summer and don’t mind puttering in the garden. Around here, spirea, smaller red-twigged dogwoods, and panicled hydrangeas like Little Lime would work well. An untended flower garden advertises that no one is currently living there full time, but there are a few easy care perennials that could be tended just on weekends. Perhaps a few large pots with Geraniums or another annual that doesn’t mind occasional dry soil to provide some cheerful color on the deck out back, but on that side of the house, you want the lake view to be the star and so I would generally keep it simple....See MoreSpruce up Exterior on a Yellow/Tan and Brown Brick House!
Comments (8)You haven’t said anything about budget. Change out the siding color starting from the colors in your brick. I would want something somewhat darker than the current color. I can’t see that adding cedar shingles to the top part of the gable ends, leaving the rest as it currently is, will be an improvement. Changing out the garage door for one with windows is a good idea. Match its color to the siding as the white highlights something that doesn’t need extra attention. Widen the walkway so that two people can walk abreast, and make it of more interesting material. Find a garden designer to help you come up with a garden design that suits both your taste and ability/interest in doing the needed maintenance. What you currently have has some evergreens which is good, but there isn’t anything interesting or that complements the architecture. You landscape is stuck in the 60’s with nothing except for your two rows of evergreens and a small patch of some type of flowers....See MoreExterior Spruce up
