New kitchen countertops and backsplash help
Hey, we are trying to update our countertops and add a backsplash to add value to rent/sell our home. If we rent we plan on moving back after my husband is out of the military, so I want to actually like what we pick out. We already bought stainless appliances and we don’t really want to paint the cabinets. We were thinking of quarts, specifically something white that looks like marble. Silestone Satuario is nice but I dont know if it’ll look good with our maple cabinets. Also, we thought subway tiles with grey grout? We are thinking of cutting the bar top down to one level.

Comments (6)First, cool hanging light fixture :) What do you think of white Shaker cabinetry with concrete counters. I think the copper sink may be hard to decorate around; I can't really tell from the pics how dark the copper is, but if it's deep brown, then I think it'll go with the concrete. As for backsplash, glass subway tile is a nice contemporary look if you'd like to pull in a contemporary element. You could also go with white or pale gray tiles in something like 3 x 12 stack set. Then grout in white. Under cabinet lighting will make the glass tile sparkle if you opt for that. Comments (240)What a charming house! You've done great. I had somehow missed this thread up to this point, and I did not read all (or even a significant fraction) of the previous responses. I have a 1910 house and also don't like subway tile. But I wanted something that fit the era of the house. I ended up going with a simple (and extremely cheap) 4x4 white field tile capped with a contoured molding tile (that almost but doesn't quite match the field tile because I couldn't find a molding I like from the a manufacturer that did a 4x4 field tile that was 4x4 rather than 4.25 x 4.25. Adds to the charm). I have very few uppers, though. I think a 4x4 white (or gray, since you seem to think white is too stark) field tile with black or charcoal pencil liner would be cool. These all show a pencil liner with subway because that's what the popular kids are doing, but it would work as well with a 4x4 or other basic field tile....See Morekitchen remodel design help! cabinets,countertops and backsplash
Comments (7)I just finished a budget friendly kitchen update (No backsplash as of yet). I had very similar oak cabinets that I purchase new door fronts and drawer fronts, removed the cabinet above the stove, and added a pantry hutch style cabinet. I painted all the frames and doors/drawers myself, husband installed all the doors, hardwares, and new cabinets. It turned out awesome and IMO (doesnt look like a do it yourself project) and neighbors, friends, and family agree (maybe biased IDK). SO depending on your budget, there is nothing wrong with using your existing cabinets if they are in good condition and the layout is functional. My kitchen does not appear to be as large as yours, however, with new cabinet doors/fronts, hardware, new 6' long by 70" height pantry hutch, sink, faucet, quartz counters I spent just shy of $9,000. My doors/fronts and new cabinets were from a custom cabinet maker, which by the way, was less then stock cabinets of similar style at a box store. This is not my dream kitchen, but the kitchen that fit in the existing space in a nice home that I plan on selling and custom building in the next 4 to 5 yrs. 6 years agoI have warm toned cabinets - different style but I recently had new counters, backsplash and sink installed. Technically my quartz is not a "marble look" but I often get asked if it is marble. It has cream and some warmer colors along with some gray so it works with my warm toned cabinets. There are several out there with similar qualities:
My pics -work in progress: · More InfoOnce you pick your countertop, look at the lighter tones of the counter and use that as a guide to the backsplash tile. If possible, wait till the countertop is installed before making a final decision on the backsplash. Sometimes, the big picture of the counters can change what you want. I adjusted the tone of the white I wanted - moved more to a cream - you would probably need to go more white to work with both the warm and cool tones..
When the tile has been installed, but has not been grouted yet, there will be the illusion of a contrasting grout. That look can help you decide whether you like it, or if it doesn't look like you expected.
Since you do appear to be trying to mix the warm and cool tones - not easy at all, you might take some ideas from this kitchen.It does successfully mix maple with gray in part buy using a lot of neural white:
I agree with Sina about the flooring - it already is struggling next to the cool toned wood look flooring.

6 years agoBased off of the photos, it looks like the quartz you like would be too stark with your flooring. You need something with some warmth in them. This has a creamy background, that incorporates the warmth from your floor and cabinetry along with some gray if you are trying to incorporate it. A warm white backsplash would help it to feel light and airy. Good luck with your changes and move!
