If you hate it and you have a little cash that you’d be spending on decor—maybe just get a painter in to redo it? You could stay at a hotel or w family for a night or 2 so baby’s not around the fumes (even w low VOC paint I’d take my newborn out of there for the first day).

As a new mom you spend a LOT of time sitting at home and if you dont like that blue, its not going away no matter how wonderfully the rest of your decor compliments it. I for one would also be sad about that particular shade of blue unless you’re changing your couches. I’m not a decor expert, just a fellow mom - so take this with a grain of salt-but for me , that paint with your couches would be very hard to reconcile. And paint is cheaper than new furniture. I dont think your husband would take it personally- mine wouldn’t. It’s not about his effort, it’s just about the fact that sometimes you don’t know how paint color will look until it’s up on the wall. Would have been nice to do a portion of a wall and allow you to see it (even in cell phone shot) before proceeding with the whole thing. Sounds like it was super sweet of him but imo you’re likely going to spend way more money trying to work around this blue paint then you would if you just changed it :)

or, change the couches.

Also no matter what, get yourself a treat and get a different TV stand that actually looks like furniture :) it will help w the look of the whole room imo.

I love that colour, it's superfresh. I like the ideas Simply Organized has posted, but as an alternative I'd say concentrate on darker and lighter shades of that blue plus cool minty greens, white and perhaps a splash or two sorbet yellow. I think I'll play a bit looking for inspiration and come back soon.

Thank you Simply Organized I like your idea. I haven't thought about the orange yellow mixture. By adding all this additional items it will give more color into the space.

Hi, Tatyana, What a sweet husband to paint while you're in the hospital! Congrats on the baby! Surprisingly, if you ADD blue to your room, the walls will seem less blue. I added a lamp, pillows, and artwork with the blue in it.

My eye is drawn to the white trim. How about if the walls were a shade of white from the chair rail on up? And a blue rug, working with the idea to add blue posted above. Wall mount tv just above rail? Yes to more substantive console. Good luck, enjoy your baby!

I think that when that room “fills up” with art and accessories, the blue will actually be lovely.

I love your blue. We have a very old house with bead board wainscot painted blue like yours. In our case it is Farrow & Ball "blue ground" with "lime white" trim. You might want to go to the Farrow & Ball website and look up room examples with "blue ground" color. They have some very nice rooms with a variety of other colors mixed in.

PS I hope I haven't committed an error by including a brand name here...not sure what the rules are.

The waincotting is usually consider finish trim work & is traditionally painted same color as trim. If all below the chairail was white, it would be easier to paint & be done with the floating square look on the bottom.

So anytime in future, if wanting to change colors above all the flat above area gets painted while the bottom is considered trim below. The bottom will be painted when all trim is painted instead. It will not have to be cut in trimmed painted between the squares everytime. Much easier.

I am glad I commented and saw all the follow up posts because I have learned a lot! Sounds like I may be wrong about that blue being too hard to reconcile with black couches :)

Indigo -- you got it right, I had it backwards! Yes, to white on bottom and that will help the blue "make sense" visually.

H-D, Indigo rose yes you are right. OMG for the story I did not even know how was called those square shape decoration on the living room. definitely I am opting for painting all the base on my wall in white.

Painting the area below the chair rail white would be a nice
look, a bit less choppy. Another option would be to keep the chair
rail, keep the blue on the bottom, and instead remove the white frame
molding. Either would be quite sad for hubby, because that was a lot
of work painting around those moldings.

Does anyone have an idea of drapery which might go along with the idea of painting all my wall base in white? Rina has suggested a variance of blue. any other suggestions?

Totally get your overwhelmed feeling. I once picked out a nice shade of blue that looked way to harsh as well.

Maybe your husband dislikes it as much as you do? Maybe he doesn't want to give you the blues, but is inwardly choking on this color too?

I would try to find his honest perspective and if he is in doubt too, I would really and sincerely apologize very much indeed. Then I would suggest to go for at least two shades lighter and try it out on a bit of one wall first.

And indeed, keeping the lower part in step with the woodwork, I'd paint that all white anyway.

Although some given ideas might soften the pain a bit, it will never become what it is supposed to be.

Alternatively you could make this the room of your newborn, if he is a son, and move the living room into his bedroom... just kidding ;)

At least you'll never fall into this trap again for the rest of your life.
