I need suggestions for my living room
Comments (9)I can't help with the sofa, but one thing I can suggest . . .I also have young children (7, 4, 2, and one on the way) and our only real TV is in the LR (we have one in our bedroom that never gets used). I hate it in there, but DH doesn't want it in the playroom, so that's that. One of the things I was finally able to do was make the whole wall where the TV is have bookshelves, so the TV is only one part of that main wall. My children have always enjoyed reading anyway, but having such easy access (not to mention how great it is for storage when we get more books, used/new/from the library) makes them read even more. Our small budget only allowed for IKEA bookcases, but so far they've served our purpose well. We used these on either side of the TV: with this stand in the middle: And 2 of these shelves above the TV:...See MoreThis Living Room needs help, what would you suggest?
Comments (27)Vintage orange floors here too! What worked for me was to just let it be what it was - using the right greens/blue greens seem to make the floor read more like a reddish brown which is a lot more palatable than orangie orange.. I second the advice to avoid dark expresso stains on the floor - not only does it show dust and dirt but like anything itll look dated in time and then what. When I redid my floors (the aforementioned vintage fir with its orange tendencies) I was advised to use a deep tone sealer (not a stain) to tame the orange tendencies and give it a beautiful tone. Also what I learned - very often its the OLD POLYURETHANE on the floor that's yellowed and taken on that sickly dingy color - not the wood itself! Which means taking that off, and putting on a clear non yellowing waterbase finish with or without the deeptone sealer could look FABULOUS. - the place I went to had all kinds of wood samples with different finishes I could take home and look at Now, are these old growth vintage wood floors? If so that's another reason to not stain - by totally obscuring the grain with heavy pigmented stain, you may be missing the opportunity to have some TRULY drop dead STUNNING floors. Cant really make out the grain/color too clearly from here, but you might post close up photos of the wood over on woodworking forum and see what they think....See MoreNeed your suggestions in decorating my living room
Comments (12)You can get one of the sisal-type rugs at Ikea to put under your existing rug to expand the space. This also helps if you like a rug but don't have the budget for a large size. I'd look at slip covers, purchased or made, for the furniture and a few decorative pillows. For furniture placement: A trick I learned from my mom: actually move the furniture around to see how different configurations really work - take everything out except the heavy furniture so do that first, then add the small stuff, plants, etc. Some nice decorative plant pots would also help the space. It looks like your furniture is placed a bit far away from the TV. You also could consider getting one of the expanding/rotating arms for the TV to give you more viewing/furniture placement options. It takes a little time to get the curated, layered looks that you see in pictures, but it can be done and takes less than you might think. Good luck!...See MoreSuggestions on how to make my living room less "blah"?
Comments (106)Color!!!! Must have color!!! You just have a bunch of random neutrals of same intensity put together - white, beige, grey, greige, black, white, brown wood tone, beige-grey, blue-grey. Monochrome can work but there needs to be a range of intensities (from very light to dark) and textures to provide visual interest. Read up on the 60-30-10 rule and decide which color you want for each percentage, and then be ruthless about sticking with the plan....See MoreKim Berlee
