Franksmom, it's BM Mellowed Ivory. My trim is the lightest color on the strip. Pal and Sparkling water, my subtle hint detector isn't working. I know you haven't seen the coral bedcover (It's a carved velvet and the carved-out parts have a green and ivory stitching in them), but are you suggesting that coral walls are a better choice by more than a slight amount? Or is coral an option of similar value? I was concerned about the wood tones. The case goods are the nicest thing in the room and I usually feel more comfortable with more contrast between the wall and the wood furn. I'm afraid I must disagree with the suggestion that green on the walls will tone down the brick. Actually, the opposite is true...colors that are opposites on the color wheel will bring up the color in both...so green makes orange look twice as orange, and yellow makes purple much stronger. We dealt with the same issue by painting our walls a soft neutral, and then putting a four to one mixture of water and paint in a bucket, washing it onto the brick chimney wall with a big paintbrush, and patting it down with a handful of cotton rag. This method works wonderfully to control the look, and keeps the variety among the different bricks, while tying it all into the room in a much more sophisticated way. It took one morning to do the whole thing, and gave the effect more of stone than brick. I wanted the hearth to relate to the dark floor rather than to the wall, because it keeps the brick wall from intruding visually into the room area...so I painted the inside of the firebox and the whole brick hearth flat black. Then I brushed a second coat of semi-gloss black just over the surfaces of the hearth bricks themselves, which made the whole thing settle into the floor. The grout stayed flat and shadowy, the nooks and crannies likewise, and the effect was much more natural than the dustiness of just flat black, or the fakey plasticky-ness of all semigloss. You could do the same thing with a deep tone of your carpet color. I wish I had a photo to show you. It looked wonderful, if I do say so myself!

Okay...all the junk is out! Plan: clean up/mop dust, mortar chips, etc. and spend the evening with my paint samples...narrow down to three or four...paint sample boards, and pick a color. I would love to have time to see the sample boards in different light etc.; but my get-er-done DH scheduled plumbers on Monday and convinced the tile setters to partially grout the shower and come back to finish on Monday too....Grrrr! So...I plan to only paint behind the toilet and area and by bullnose edging. If I pick wrong.....I will not have to do redo the whole room. If I pick the wrong color, I am not worried about repainting near the bullnose; it is the toilet area that worries me. Anyone have a tip for painting behind a toilet that is 1/2 inch from the wall just in case. This is our attempt to correct a horrible inefficient layout...not thrilled about looking at the side of a toilet; but that compromise meant a towel closet in the bathroom (finally), a 60x60 angle shower, and room for a 77" double vanity while eliminating the 3 right angles in the second entrance from the master bath.

Consider a cream or a green with gray undertone or gray with green undertone. Cool grays with warm woods are often a miss, but green grays, which are usually warmish, seem to help bridge the cool / warm divide. A warm wood kitchen combined with lots of white can also be a calm place. These cabinets are not alder - but it is calm and would be calmer if the grout was a lighter gray or even white: You don't show the sink wall, but with all that storage along the fridge wall, you might remove some sink wall cabinets and leave more open area. Put up some calm and pretty artwork instead. This kitchen is also not alder, but the increased window and decreased cabinets make for a calm and pretty space: You don't need to tile the walls - just a pretty painted wall with some pretty calm art would work. Before you paint the cabinets, look at the possibility of calming other surfaces, especially the backsplash if it is at all busy. This is one green gray which might work. I might do a slightly lighter shade.
