Faux painted garage doors to look like wood?
Comments (1)I notice that the house has very light trim, light painting on the house itself, a sort of medium mix on the brown gray stone and the medium brown wood door and very dark on the roof of the porch, but the garage only has the very light trim and lightish main color. Have you thought about bringing some medium colors over for the garage trim and then making the garage doors a similar medium brown? What material are the garage doors made of? I have had good luck with acrylic paints but you need to match the paint type with the material....See MoreWill a wood-look garage door still look like wood?
Comments (20)I have a fiberglass garage door in white, and while I love the look, the insulating qualities, & light weight (easier on the opener's motor than heavy wood), I wouldn't want it in a faux wood look. When I researched entry doors, it seemed like the big complaint about wood-look fiberglass is that it fades after time and needs to be restained periodically. I wouldn't want to do that for a big garage door. The gel staining wouldn't be too difficult, but applying the UV resistant poly coats would give me pause. A wood door's maintenance would be just as demanding, and wood is heavier (needs more powerful door openers) and is prone to warping (which is why we got rid of our old wood doors). I would think a steel door in a faux wood finish would have the same maintenance issues as fiberglass. It's not so much the door material as the coating on it -- stains & poly don't stand up to heat, sun, rain, & snow well. So just as long as you know what you're getting into. A wood look door may well be worth the effort & expense to you. And maybe your DIY skills are way better than mine! Wood garage doors seem to be the fashion now. Over in Advice, many are asking how to update their homes. The popular answers are 1. Don't paint the brick, it's a maintenance hassle; 2. Replace your garage door with a stained wood door. I question the responses because in my experience, it's the opposite: stained wood garage doors are a maintenance hassle, but painted brick is not if prepped well (is in good condition, sparkling clean and bone dry before painting)....See MoreWood species for painted cabinets-Don’t like maple, looks too perfect
Comments (16)About 95% of your concern sounds like coatings rather than wood. Products today are simply a little more plasticky looking. Generally, as coatings get a little more durable they get a lot more plasticky. There are ways to achieve solid durability while minimizing the plastic look. The easiest being adapting color coats and protecting with lower sheen topcoats. Another option is to brush on the color coat with a thicker product. This will leave the classic brushmarks in the paint. You could also pick woods with grains known to show through such as oaks, and use a clear sealer rather than pigmented sealer. There are many ways a good coatings person can achieve a good durable finish like you are asking for on most any wood. The problem will be finding that good coatings person. Cabinetmaking, even custom cabinetmaking, is a production type activity. You may find people who have incredible knowledge of coatings, but you may also find great cabinetmakers with little knowledge of coatings....See MoreWhite interior doors, husband wants to paint wood trim
Comments (9)The doors and trim should be the same color. If you are doing white cabinets they can be the same as the trim or they can be a few shades darker than the white doors and trim. There has to be enough difference that it looks intentional and not like a mistake. My preference is to paint the cabinets, trim, doors and ceilings with one white and not try to find two whites that work together....See Morecindyb202003
