Will a wood-look garage door still look like wood?

We need a new garage door. Most of the garage doors in my neighborhood are painted (wood or steel). However, I'd like a stained wood look (real or fake) because I think it will suit the brick better and not stand out as much. In the next neighborhood over, there are several stained-look garage doors. Some look really nice, some look like they've seen better days, probably when they were brand new. From the street I can't tell if they are real stained wood, or something else.

One, how can I tell without knocking on doors?

Two, what's the good-look time frame? Does the stained-wood look hold up on an insulated steel door? How do you maintain a real stained wood door?

Our house is north-facing in the Midwest. TIA!
