Creative Recycling
Comments (141)i think if you dilute the heck out of it it would be ok... i try and recycle everything, in fact if im buying certain things that will likely break or deteriorate before i die, i think about how am i going to dispose of it. it saves me money. my patio table/chairs was bought becuase its aluminum(if it breaks i can still recoup a few bucks) lately my thing has been pallets. last weekend i brought 3 home from work, and built a crate (for 2 SWCs i built from neighbors cat litter buckets, wife wasnt thrilled about the sight of cat litter buckets in the yard, dont blame her) a build as you grow potato bin, birdhouse(funny story, that was a bet that i could build a birdhouse in 30 minutes, i took me 45, but still) and a nice toasty fire outside while i admired my creations. i love pallets check out global buckets.org? just google global buckets. great stuff. google "self watering container plastic tote" at my thrift stores theres ALWAYS(unless im looking for them) plastic totes. you can make a seed starting heat mat out of xmas lights, cardboard and an old cookie sheet(items usually at the thrift store) i save water bottles(we dont use alot) for mini drip irrigation waterers. poke 3-5 holes in the bottom and one in the cap. fill from rain barrel, sit down at base of tomato. 1 liter of water in the soil. less disease. less water wasted. i can go on for days. i likely will....See MoreValentine's tables
Comments (59)sandi, thank you. We waited as long as we could for him, but he had to work late, and you are right, they had already had their day together, he has to work extra hrs sometimes, but DD and I were OK with this. patty, oh that is so aggravating to get home and find the items broken, that has happened to me too. The only place I have seen the candle holders like mine have been at Macys. Once Walmart sold out of them after Xmas, they did not bring them back, I suppose it was a Christmas "type" of item rather and a regularly carried thing in their store. Mary, thank you. I had purchased the lotus candle holders at Walmart during the Xmas season, figureing that I would use them for a few different things, they look pretty holding a small cake or holding decorated cup-cake too. In this case I just used them as a charger/throne for the footed bowl for the shrimp cocktail. I like to think of ways I can use something for a different use. You can even turn them upside down for a different "footed look". luvs, thank you for the complements too. Work and it's issues sometimes gets me down and I just have to step back a bit, retirement can't come soon enough LOL I'm not sure what you mean by 2 chargers. I used the round mirror placemat and the silver flower edged tray as a charger, and the rest were just my china plates (probably hard to tell by my photos). Believe me the candle light really adds immeasurably to the atmosphere, and the real flowers make me happy too. purple moon, thank you, LOL, they are all easy to clean, if not then it would be a whole other situation, even the silver just gets washed in hot soapy water, a good rinse and dry and WaLa, done! In fact washing china is easier than washing stoneware, china is very light, but sturdy. Yachter, thank you, I have aquired alot of things over the years and interchange them alot. Plus, I tend to put my "extra" money into dishes and such, I don't have an extensive wardrobe and such, and most of all the DD is finally out on her own, so I have a few more pennies to spend than I had in the past, but even I have to slow down, I have some major house fixing to do coming up. As far as storage, well I can take over all the closet and shelf space I want LOL, since I'm alone now. I do plan on doing some major shelving in the garage this summer for the less delicate things....See MoreNo kitchen reno for me :(
Comments (38)while i don't think you should go into debt etc i do hope you don't give up your dream for a new kitchen. if you need to move things around, pay to have that done and get your cabs in. set up a temp/mini kitchen somewhere - microwave, toaster oven. meals won't be what dh is used to til done - and that's ok. he will live.lol! I found -back when I was married - and sister says her dh is the same - that men don't like an idea coming from dw - but it's a fine idea when THEY come up with it. often (I found and so does she) that a few wks or so later he suddenly has this GREAT idea - exactly what I/she already brought up! lol! men... if you have to go with laminate for a few yrs - they have some awesome laminate now. I don't want granite /tile because I drop stuff so much (daily) and the tile also because of my feet/legs/back. and there's the habitat restore. I'm even gonna go there next fall and look myself - just in case they have something I can use. I know what I want my cabs to look like and if they have them - great! while your kitchen is torn up for 'rearranging' and cabs - do the ceiling and whatever else you can get done. I'm not really doing enough i think to hire a gc (tho dbf would be that anyway - as he has done that most of his life) but I do have an electrician I can call (dbff's brother) and plumber (the sub on my sister's house does work on the side). other than that dbf and i (not much help from me tho) will do it with the help of his son (I think) and one of his workmen (maybe). I'm thinking of hiring my neighbor boy (18) to clean it up and paint for me. if he can lay a laminate wood floor, i might pay him to do that... but depending on what all needs done, maybe you can sub it out? I do think bids from other subs is a good idea. surely another 1 or 2 around there also have a good reputation and you just haven't heard about them - yet. btw - did you say that engine cost 52K?...See MoreFrank Lloyd Wright updated bathroom
Comments (35)I don't think it's a matter of affecting historical significance so much as creating a bathroom that looks compatible with the house long-term. The original bathroom will always look "correct" in a house, no matter how old it is, because it's what the house came with. Replacements can be problematic. I doubt the people who put the remodeled baths in the FLW houses I've shown above thought they looked as out of place in the 1980s or 1990s or early 2000s as they look out of place now. Everything about the bath the OP has pictured says "original". Often the toilets got replaced, but that tile-in sink, faucet, the vertical tube lighting, and the Hall-Mack recessed soap dish, cup/toothbrush holder (which you can sell on eBay--a new-old-stock one is listed for $175), speak to the era of the house. I don't think the OP has to recreate the original bath, but the closer in spirit the bath is to the original house, the less likely it will look dated and out of place in seven years. It might still look dated (like the original looks dated) but not out of place, so much. I really would not use any tile that is trendy enough to say 2010s for example....See Morenosoccermom
