X mas cactus buds!
Comments (11)Pep, I see the little buds..yep, they're small, but normal for this time of yr..You know, once you bring a CC inside, those buds grow faster...is there any way you can leave outside a bit longer? I keep mine out till the first frost..When temps hit 33-34F degrees.. Like you, I find Christmas cactus flower by or before Thanksgiving, even though they were purchased during Christmas and blooming..So, I'm sure they're Christmas cactus, but due to the heat when brought indoors, they bloom ealier. Tracy, look at the right side of Pep's Christams Cactus..on the tips of stems/leaves, you'll find little buds..This reminds me of the kids books, 'Can you find the picture?' LOL..Toni...See MoreWhat are your old fashioned tips?
Comments (101)Just a note "Dio Tenaceous" earth is actually "diatomaceous earth" (aka "DE"), as it is made of diatoms. :) When you use it either for garden or pet, there are some cautions to take. First, always use "food grade" DE. Pool-grade DE is too sharp and can be harmful; it is not meant to be ingested or used on pets or plants where humans or pets could ingest (or lick). Fresh-water food-grade is best, but most organic gardening places and many online shops sell food-grade DE. Second, as with ALL dusts, please do not use so much that you can really see it or breathe it, and always make sure either to not breathe it and use eye protection if there is a wind (and cover your pets' eyes), or use a dust mask, etc. One way of distributing it is by using a pizza cheese sprinkler. Planting tomatoes: When you plant them, pick the leggier plants. Pick off the lower branches of your transplants, and plant the tomato at an angle / Various: Look up "companion planting" there are many plants that grow well together. If you plant companion plants at the base of taller plants, you will have to do less weeding, and you will water more efficiently. One example is planting greens between onions, or basil at the feet of tomatoes. Strawberries. Plant radish patches near your strawberry patches. The radishes will draw the lygus bugs away from your strawberry blooms. You can them vacuum them off of the radishes or use your organic chemicals there without hurting your delicate berries....See MoreHow To Force X-Mas Cactus To Bloom
Comments (6)Hi ..... I don't know if you can force it to bloom... if I were to try to force it....I would repete what I do in the fall...(I keep my cc outside all summer and in the fall I leave it outside until its going to freeze and then I move it to my garage until it is going to freeze in there and then move it in the house to my living room and by that time it is budding) well I can't do that now as it is winter but I can put it down stairs where it is cooler...I guess I would set the plant in front of my patio door down stairs and wait until it started to bud and then move it upstairs in my living room....Hummmmmm I might just do that and see if it will bloom again.... I think its the cool temps that makes them bloom not how much light they get or what the light source is..... thats just my thinking.......good luck.....linda...See MoreObscure Cooking Terms & Old-Fashioned Words
Comments (18)Carolyn, you posted the Chocolate Chess Pie one time and I remarked on that half eggshell of milk. Let me tell you: I made that pie, very carefully measuring the milk in the eggshell -- my older son, who is an excellent cook, observed this and thought I was bonkers -- but it worked beautifully. It's soooo good! I love your raisin pie recipe too. Granjan, another Iowan here. My grandparents, both sets, always put everything on the table, except the desserts (there was never just one) -- those were on the sideboard. My mother, however, decided to serve three courses: soup or salad as the starter; then the main dish, starch, vegetable (with bread); and dessert. I think she got the idea from the "gracious living" thing that was popular in the late 1950s. She even did the tablecloth, cloth napkins, candles and flowers bit for a while -- can't remember why it ultimately fizzled, though. As a child I was a notoriously picky eater and only gradually did I learn to like a lot of different foods. I had to adjust or otherwise I would've starved, being a journalist and constantly in places where most of the food was completely unfamiliar to me. But when I did become a more adventurous eater, I thought wowee! this is life. Unfortunately that only lasted about ten years, and now I mostly get my food kicks vicariously, by reading cookbooks and lingering over descriptions of food -- notice above how I had to copy Vee's lovely roast lamb menu. Food threads are always such a pleasure....See MorePoohBearLvr
