Runway Fashion Comes Home
Urban Bohemian, Punk, Denim and Color Strut Their Stuff in Decor
When we decorate our homes we can find inspiration from the fashion world. Trends in color, pattern and style tend to pop off the runway and into our rooms. Art we place in our homes can further express what inspires us. When you design fashion and art to work together the results can be creative genius. Check out some of these artful, fashion-forward spaces!
Color blocking is super-duper hot now. In fashion terms, this simply means wearing different colors together. In home interiors, color blocking creates spaces that come to life. To add more color in your own space, take a worn piece of wooden or metal furniture to the next level by painting it a bold color, then place it in the room with lots of colorful throw pillows.
Punk is back in fashion, down to its black leather combat boots. This room shows its punkiness with leather, a bit of metal and red accents. Oh, the rebellious irony to take an elegantly lined sofa and upholster it in black leather. I have had a wave of clients recently taking antique pieces and covering them in white or black leather with nail-head trim. Even the lady in the room, the wall art, tells you this room has attitude. Use your artwork to express what your room is feeling!
The designer of this space turned fashion into art. What an unpredictable way to marry the two. If you have a walk-in closet and some extra wall space, why not hang up a pair of shoes you once loved but never wear? If you are a mom and you are holding onto a baby outfit that brings back great memories, hang it on the wall. You can also attach it to a canvas board painted in a coordinating color.
The spring fashion collections showed a lot of yellows, from mellow to vibrant. Taking cue from the runway, a big bold piece of art in a golden hue adds warmth and brilliance to a sleek, modern kitchen. More golden color is brought in through the Eames shell chairs, fun staples in design.
Tip: When working with artwork, make sure it is not hung too high. I like to hang artwork in a kitchen or dining room a bit lower so they can be viewed easily when sitting down.

Orange is again the new black. You know it is a hot color when fashion-forward Thomas Paul works with it. Check out the drapery fabric. The pops of persimmon work well with the artwork, "The Languishing Drifters" giclee print, because it does not have any other colors in it to take away from the pull of the orange drapes. There is no conflict, yet both are large and in charge.
Royalty seems to live here — and he owns a squeak toy. I can't imagine anything more perfect to hang above this fashionable, glitzy dresser than a crowned dog. What makes this a perfect marriage for me is the rich dark wood wall treatment behind it. I love to use deep paint colors to bring artwork out.
This room screams fashion and art live here! Each piece of furniture is a work of art, fitted with fashionable upholstery, especially the red cabinet with ornate detail. After looking at the art on the wall, I was instantly inspired to take black-and-white photos of my own favorite high heel shoes and hats (I collect fedoras), then mat and frame them.
Vintage is still hot in fashion. This room takes me back to the '60s and '70s, and I'm loving it! Avocado green, lime, golds, and what looks like crochet-slipcovered Panton Chairs — all topped off with an antler chandelier. The bold, unexpected decor unifies art and fashion in one space. Make your own fun statement with Panton chairs in other funky colors.
Have you ever wondered what would happen if you watered a wooden chair? It sprouts tulips! Add chairs with architectural interest or funky fabric and you will make any room feel so special.
Create a mix of vibrant colors and whimsical design using the Urban Bohemian trend seen on the runway and in home decor. Get bedding that is bold in color and pattern, then use some of the colors from the bedding around the room as accents on furniture, artwork, and/or wall treatments, to complete the color scheme.
This bathroom makes an artistic fashion statement as part of the metallic trend. This is a very feminine look. Here's a similar ornate floral mirror.

Denim continues to be popular in fashion, from pants, tops, dresses to shoes. And it looks perfect used as the upholstery on headboards. The print complements it perfectly, taking you to a nautical frame of mind without hitting you over the head with the theme.
I doubt a summer will pass without a floral trend in fashion, and this room reminds us why. Gorgeous! The wall art plays up the space without taking away from it.
