Is There Winter Interest, Among Your Old-Fashioned Roses?
Comments (26)I hibernate like my roses and watch the garden from a window. From my kitchen window I can see the blanda rose 'Betty Bland' with red canes next to Rosa pendulina, with its red flagonshaped hips. Other roses with hips near the house are R. moyesii, alba Suaveolens, R. stellata mirifica, the Portland rose and several rugosas. Pines, junipers, box and yew topiary add evergreen interest. The highlight of my winter garden is the round boxedged bed that looks wonderful powdered with snow while the sides are green. Close to the front door are two large box balls, mahonia, cherry laurel, Christmas roses and a clipped yew with red berries. I have put most evergreens where I can see them from inside or walking up to the house, redleaved bergenia 'Winterglow', rhododendrons, periwinkle, eight small box balls, euonymus 'Emerald'n Gold', cotoneaster 'Coral Beauty' and dwarf conifers like Picaea glauca 'Conica'....See MoreWhat is your best and most beloved reblooming old-fashioned rose?
Comments (48)This is a great question, I've enjoyed all the posts. I haven't had a real rose garden since 1995. The bloom I most looked forward to then was not remontant, but the best moment in that garden was when Madame Legras de St. Germain threw out her sweet, prolific blooms up the front of the garage and over the door. I am still in structural mode in my new garden, improving soil and building paths and arbors, etc. It will probably be 3 more summers before I plant new roses. So hard to wait!!! @ gardenerzone4- Molineaux should be fine for you, I saw it growing in the Minnesota Arboretum this summer. I believe they used soil and mulch at the base of the plant for winter protection. DH is trying to convince me to grow it since he is a philosopher who loves the name as well as the color.-- Also, I am curious about your italian roses, what do you do to winter protect them? Comments (4)Hi Ll! I had quite a few in my old Pennsylvania garden . I only have a few in pots now in nashville . I plan on ordering a small handful to build up my collection again. One in particular that stood out to me that I was really looking forward to enjoying was darlows enigma . What a wonderful scent and grew like a bad weed ! Also buff beauty was gorgeous and smelled great too. The colors changed with the temps. Very healthy and fast growing . I also enjoyed my ballerina rose , as it ( also darlows enigma) was a bee haven. Another favorite was Abraham Darby . I am not sure if they qualify as old garden roses , but they are missed for sure! I left a lot behind because the new homeowner expressed interest in keeping them , only to find out she dug most out and gave away. She never even let herself have one flowering season with them! :( Oh I forgot , the fairy is beautiful shrub rose , while fragrance free it is always in bloom and I mean covered in it. Not old fashioned but has a romantic look to it! This the fairy , before it really opened Here's one I've posted before , but ballerina is in front of the statue and the fairy is by the bird feeder ....See MoreWhatever happened to the old fashioned Birthday parties for kids
Comments (3)Not to mention that the silly term "appies" is just plain annoying. :-) I would have more patience with this poster, who apologized for not having read the rules, if she hadn't then, a few minutes later, posted this one. Too bad, because, business motive or not, she does seem to have decent ideas about entertaining (think of some of the other garbage we've seen from spammers); she could've been a welcome contributer if she really were just a regular user, not someone fishing for business....See Morejimax1920
