Re-potting question
Comments (15)Before I start, please realize I've only really been growing Hoyas for 2 years, so I am definitely still a newbie. But, I do repot all rooted cuttings I get within a week or two of receiving them. I hose off all media from the roots when I do this. I am not gentle at all. Reason is because I am using inorganic growing media, so I want all the bark/soil etc completely off the roots. I haven't had any problems doing this, in fact, it's amazing the root growth I get when I move them into the new media. Also, I do use 4 inch pots, but again I'm using inorganic media which dries much more quickly, so there is less chance of root rot. I use the bigger pots for stabilization, as they spend most of the year outside with a natural breeze, and the smaller pots tend to tip over a lot. When I was using an organic media, I did keep them in smaller pots though. Renee...See MoreBought a hoya today, now what?
Comments (20)I wouldn't worry if you can't find that violet fertilizer. Though a few people swear by it, I do not recommend it at all. Its 5-50-18 formula has around 30 times more phosphorus than most plants can use, which just unnecessarily increases the mineral concentration in the soil. The goal should be to provide what the plant will use, and nothing more. Any fertilizer with an N:P:K ratio near 3:1:2 would be a good choice. I really like Dyna-Gro's Foliage Pro 9-3-6, but there are plenty of other good choices as well. Miracle Gro's all purpose plant foods (24-8-16 or 12-4-8 depending on solid or liquid) fit the bill. Even a common 10-10-10 formula will work if that's the best you can find. I would just try to avoid extreme formulas like the 5-50-18 mentioned above....See MoreUmbrella plant in distress
Comments (1)By "umbrella plant" to you mean Papyrus? The stuff that grows along the Nile river. If it is, it should come back from the roots even if the top dies. I learned my lesson about hauling plants in the back of a pickup when the wind pretty much shreded the leaves of my bamboo, but it sounds like yours got shocked from being inside(warm) to getting wind whipped by cold air. good luck!...See MorePoem for socks
