Climbing Pinkie in Colder Zones

I’ve been reading a lot of glowing reviews for this rose, but almost all of them are from growers in the southern US. Does anyone grow it in zone 7 or colder with success? I’m wondering how hardy it is and how big will it get.

My area tends to be rather ... dynamic for temperature ranges. This last winter was especially cold and harsh. That said, we also had more snow cover than usual too.

My Climbing Pinkie is still young and last winter was its first in my garden. It had some die back, but still had several feet worth of cane for the slightly older growth. I expect for it to do fine in my zone after my previous research and opinion gleaning from these forums, and now with my albeit little experience indicating similar.

Young plant, with spikes to -10 degrees, with some snow cover to help = still going strong and put out several 12' canes this year though it didn't bloom overly well and took a bit to take off this spring (but everything took a long time this spring).

I think that zone 6 is the bottom of the hardiness for Climbing Pinkie, and I haven't been able to overwinter this one in several tries in the virtual zone 6 pocket of my zone 5 yard. I suspect it'll survive but not climb much in a warm spot in zone 6 - Garden Time is 6b which I think helps in that case - but you might get it to climb OK in zone 7.

Well, since this thread is back at the top again, I might as well give an update. We removed the pinkie (I think I said that above) but left all the other roses. They all seem fine - the canes on the meidiland greened up as they matured and the knockouts look fine as well. (I realized that I planted them WAY too close together though - in only a year they've at least doubled in size!) We bushhogged the fields and had them sprayed with 2-4-D last week. That should take care of the multiflora in our fields. We still have some on the bank out by the end of our driveway and at least one of them is definitely infected with RRD (it's the one I sent samples to the state ag lab from). I can't spray that one because it's surrounded by plants I want to keep, so I guess I'll have to dig it out. Gotta get to that one of these days. Maybe I'll get out there with some aquanet and wilt-pruf to try to contain the mites before the hot weather. I decided not to spray any pesticides. I did put the wiltpruf on my roses before bushhogging - I hope it worked because it royally screwed up my blooms - on every single rose the blooms are messy and look half dead before they even open (buds that formed since I sprayed the wilt-pruf look normal again so I know it was the wilt-pruf that did it). I also tried covering them with painter's dropcloths and sheets during the actual bushhogging process but the wind kept blowing them askew (uncovering half the bush) so that was probably pointless. At this point, I'm just keeping an eye on things as best I can. I got ambitious this year and put in a big veggie garden which took longer to prepare than I thought - we just got the plants in 2 weeks ago - and so I'm way behind on my weeding/mulching in my landscape beds. (BTW, does anyone know why the leaves of my peppper plants are curling and turning yellow?) Hopefully I'll get to pay more attention to the roses soon. I'll have to, because in another couple days, it should be time to start beetle-picking....

I also grow them both ... and I love them both. Robert's description of the differences between them is spot on. Though they sound almost identical in description, and may resemble each other in photos, the differences in person are completely apparent. Peggy Martin's canes have much more substance to them, so she tends to shoot up and arch over my fence. Climbing Pinkie is much more flexible, and I have her growing on an arch. I think CP would be happier if I put her on the fence, too. For disease resistance, Peggy Martin noses ahead of Climbing Pinkie. My Peggy Martin is 4 years old, I moved it last year, and it's had at least a cluster or two of flowers on it all year so far since it's SPECTACULAR spring flush. For me, it's Peggy Martin by a nose. Glad your ND is doing well, JJpeace. You're kind to call my replacement rate perseverance, when many times it's just plain forgetfulness (or willful ignorance of the facts). This year for instance, I replaced Crescendo in J&P's $9.99 rose sale when I meant to replace Catalina - Crescendo is doing just fine. Ah well, I have different microclimates in the yard and roses do better in some spots than others. I've had roses die in my ultra-protected sunny zone 6 spot (Remember Me, Oklahoma, Royal Parks) that do quite well in other more shaded or harsher spots of the yard. Most are the reverse, which is why my hot sun spots are getting really crowded. Part of the reason I replaced Blue Moon so often was that I insisted my lavender bed was going to be in part shade to protect the color, but since lavenders are wimpy roses they really need to be in full blazing sun to survive my zone. Live and learn! Patty, I meant to say that your kind offer was welcome but I've about decided that New Dawn is too much of a monster to put the effort into for my yard, and three tries is enough for me. Steve's comment that it would take extra time to establish is that much more of a reason to pass on this one, unless a ND happens to drop into my lap like a free one I got a few years ago. There are other climbers I like more. Glad GT has survived well for you JJ, and I've found that experimenting with grafted or not, or different beds can really make a difference in rose survival. Freak deaths once or twice aren't necessarily enough to put me off a rose (yet). Cynthia

How large do paniculatas grow in colder zones? (z5b - Toronto)

I have heard of people who have QF in the northeast and it is a about as tall as me so 6' by 6' (not sure how old that shrub was though). PW seems to be bigger when I have seen pics so assume it can get to 8' (it may get wider than it is tall, so assume >> 8'). With a shorter growing season, similar shrubs in your area may be smaller and not as wide in 10 years but may be in 15 (just a guess) they may be. Also, consider that those numbers in the plant labels are "guestimates" ;o)) to begin with, probably around 10 years of maturity, not just 4 so get the smaller versions for those spaces. If you are given a size range in a plant label, assume the larger number applies to places with a longer growing season (ex.: usually the southern states) and the smaller number applies to places with a smaller growing season (usually cold northern locations). Finally, hydrangeas never stop growing so, yes, you can assume that they will keep getting bigger. However, in cold regions, dieback will occur sometimes and help keep large sizes in check. But paniculatas are also known for being vigorous growers... after being pruned, forexample, they recover almost all their previous height in a single growing season. Lastly, paniculatas like VS which have not been for sale "long enough" do not yet have a track record so it is difficult to see if the estimates in the plant labels will turn out to be way off or not.

I'm in zone 6, not sure if a or b, but central New Jersey. I have been growing Climbing Pinkie for a number of years, several specimens. CP does just fine for me. With all of my CPs, I protected them in their first 2 winters (using my "leaf bag" trick to protect the canes) - I decided to do this after the first one I got had a lot of cane die-back after its 1st winter. After the 2nd winter, I no longer protect, and they seem to do fine without protection, not much in the way of die-back. Mine definitely climb, though they probably get bigger in warmer climates. My biggest CP is maybe 15 ft tall. Hope this helps!

Nothing can replace the first-hand experience as shared by others here. I am chiming in only because I recently watched a short video about training climbers by Kukielski, a curator at Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden (I believe NYBG in Bronx is z7 as yours) and he used Climbing Pinkie as an example. In the video, Cl. Pinkie is shown in the second half and it looks like it can get a very good size in zone 7:

Thanks everyone. Your comments are very helpful, and thank you for sharing the video. I've been to that garden many times, but never in the winter, which was interesting to see. The spot I had in mind for this rose wouldn't accommodate the kind of giant plant you see in the south, so I'm okay with a slightly more restrained version.
