I've seen speculation that those two are actually the same variety. I've no way of knowing, of course.

There apparently are some different cultivars of Climbing Pinkie out there, since many people have commented that theirs has no fragrance. But if you get yours from Antique Rose Emporium, it's more likely that you can smell some fragrance. I bought one from ARE last spring and it did indeed have fragrance, and wanted to bloom, bloom, bloom--up until the point I had to throw it out from Rose Rosette Disease. I am going to get another one.

I've not had experience with Peggy Martin, but absolutely LOVE Climbing Pinkie; purchased from Antique Rose Emporium, planted it in the Fall of 2008, it is now about 10'x 5', had a good bloom last Fall, a wonderful bloom this spring, and just finished a second flush of blooms. Couldn't ask for a better performer in my opinion, although do want to try Peggy Martin.

I'm trying to cover an ugly 6' chain link fence, and have Cl Pinkie, LaMarque and Zeffie. All good roses, but Cl Pinkie performs the best.

I love my Cl Pinkie. It has only been in the ground a little over a year, and it has been covered in blossoms since spring. I am just about to go out and deadhead its second flush, since it is ready to start a third. A lovely plant.

I have both. Cl. Pinkie has larger blooms and repeats well for a climber. Peggy Martin's display in the spring is fantastic but there is little repeat in our climate. Both are relatively thornless with few prickles on the underside of the leaves. I think CP is more mannerly than PM. Both are relatively carefree but Cl. Pinkie does get some black spot.

I don't think the flowers or growth on them are difficult to distinguish. I grow them both.

Flowers
Climbing Pinkie has flowers that have larger but fewer petals and are very loosely formed. Peggy Martin has flowers with many more smaller petals, more tightly packed.

Growth Habit
Climbing Pinkie is much more graceful...it could cascade over a wall. Peggy Martin throws out stiffer canes that would NOT cascade so well.

I prefer Climbing Pinkie.

I also grow them both ... and I love them both. Robert's description of the differences between them is spot on. Though they sound almost identical in description, and may resemble each other in photos, the differences in person are completely apparent. Peggy Martin's canes have much more substance to them, so she tends to shoot up and arch over my fence. Climbing Pinkie is much more flexible, and I have her growing on an arch. I think CP would be happier if I put her on the fence, too.

For disease resistance, Peggy Martin noses ahead of Climbing Pinkie. My Peggy Martin is 4 years old, I moved it last year, and it's had at least a cluster or two of flowers on it all year so far since it's SPECTACULAR spring flush.

For me, it's Peggy Martin by a nose.

Thanks, everyone. I'm definitely leaning toward Pinkie. Those of you that have Pinkie, do you spray your roses? I don't spray at all, so would that keep you from getting Pinkie? I don't mind a little backsplot, but I'm looking for roses that look fairly healthy w/o spraying.

I must have a lame Cl. Pinkie, I don't get much anything but a huge spring showing, with an occasional bloom or two throughout the summer. And no fragrance whatsoever. But it is a very healthy plant, even in its less than optimal western exposure. I got mine from Countryside Roses, the ARE version might be better.
Pinkie does not need spraying here, but it is very dry and hot.

I grow all of my roses without any chemical support. Climbing Pinkie is one that looks good all of the time.

Laurie if your zone is anything like mine here in MS bs loves it. Peggy has never had any but CP will get some on the lower leaves in wet weather.

I definitely have Cl. Pinkie but in my exposure with morning shade and afternoon sun it mildews quite a bit in the spring and it definitely does have thorns. Unfortunately I can't remember where I purchased it. I never spray and the mildew is mostly gone now. The rose is at a guess between two and three years old and I haven't had a spectacular flush because of the spring mildew, but it does have a graceful habit with bloom that I hope will increase with time, and I'm not about to give up on it. It climbs up a column that's part of the archway behind the house and does have blooms on it now. I've just fertilized it with alfalfa and hope that there will be more bloom throughout the year.
