I think the room would be way prettier without the black loveseat.

how many do you normally seat in there? what would you like to use as the center point?

I'd remove the black loveseat and the small white wooden chair. Then I would put your current arrangement on a caddy corner. This way, no one has their back to the pretty views outside the windows.

havingfun:We have a family room we use for watching tv, ect. So a couch, and 2 chairs works. Thats kind of my dilemma, no real focal point with no fireplace or tv.

I would also be willing to get rid of the church pew if it helped.

Remove black loveseat, screen door, and wooden chair. Flip flop the 2 chairs and sofa arrangement (i.e.-sofa goes under the three windows). I think this will do a lot to open the room. Try to avoid having the back of a sofa be the main view from one room to another.

Cache317 Do you suggest leaving the big wall behind the sofa blank, keeping the church pew, and pictures as is, and leave the clock where it is?

I like the pew & pics, so it's fine as long as you still do. Same with the clock. Or you *could* move the pics above the pew to the blank wall, to create a gallery wall there. And put a single large(r) piece above the pew...maybe something similar to the wall clock. If you switch the furniture, post a pic!

Cache317 Thanks for the suggestions! I think I will wait until after the holidays to do much switching around. Would you do a bookshelf somewhere or would that be too much furniture?

I think a large builtin bookshelf would be awesome on the loveseat wall.

decoenthusiaste what above the loveseat? You don't think a piece of furniture should be floating instead of all against the walls? I always read that, but its always been hard to make it look right for me! How about a size for the pictures? We have 9 foot ceilings. I really like your suggestions!

I could slipcover it! My house doesn't have alot of color, mostly neutrals. I like some color, just bad at incorporating it.

I thought I suggested slipcovering the love. Put some family pix down the hallway, and 2-3 on the new shelves. Hang a piece of art above the loveseat. I don't like them myself, but it may be useful for you to have that much seating. If you want to get rid of it you can. Would your family enjoy a game table in that room? I'm thinking a low chess table might work with the 2 slipper chairs. Then you could put a tall bookcase on the wall where the photos are now. I like it when furniture can float, but with your traffic path from the front door to the opposite corners of this room, I really don't think it is a smart move. Keeping the bench adds interest, and if you do it up as I suggested, it will be even more attractive.

@decoenthusiaste Yes you did! Another user asked if I could slipcover it, so I was just answering them. I agree about the traffic path, and floating furniture. I think it will work better. I don't see us using a game table in that room much, since we spend most of our time in the family room. As for keeping or getting rid of the loveseat, we really don't need the extra seating.

You have a nice start and I like the bench and general arrangement, but I agree that the dark loveseat is the problem. If you don't need the seating, what about a pretty wood console desk where the loveseat is now? I also am not fond of the white chair. I can't tell if the space is big enough, but a small backless upholstered bench with a pop of color might work well there if there is room.

if you have enough seating with the white couch and the 2 chairs, why not have the window be the view? it looks like it might be pretty ? If not you have each other, nothing wrong with your family and guests being most important. i actually like your photo wall. and no nothing has to be anchored to a wall. i think you might find the bench useful on the wall behind the white couch or directly behind it. this way you can stop and take shoes and coats off.

i do have a question regarding the 2 chairs, they are pretty but are they comfortable enough?

@havingfun they arent bad for armless chairs, but arms would be more comfortable I'm sure. We don't have a view out that window, just the backyard with a slope. I'm thinking I will for sure try the bench on the wall behind the big sofa.

well if you plant some hedge type it is very easy to plant all blooming perrenials automatic conversation area. lets see if i have a couple chairs. if you like them let me know, I can look them up.

@havingfun yes I like them, probably won't replace them yet. If I get rid of the love, I think chairs that are a little larger would be nice. These look small for the space.

I haven't read all responses carefully, so forgive if this is a repeat. Agree that the black loveseat is an outlier and it sounds like you'll either remove or recover. I'd do it to match the others and find another way to bring in colors you love.

I'm going to disagree about switching out the chairs and white sofa. Since you have no tv or fireplace as a focal point, the focal point is your windows. I'm assuming that you usually sit on the sofa or loveseat and the chairs are for guests? It would disturb me to have the sofa back to the windows and gaze into a room, with the focal point (and lovely windows) behind you! I'd try a sofa/console table with a lamp on it behind the sofa where it is now.

Would the clock fit inside the screen door, like it's framed? I also like the pew, but love the large b&w photos decorenthusiast posted and think they'd look great over the bench instead of all the little ones.

I'd leave the chairs in front of the windows or if you remove the loveseat, maybe place them on that wall and leave the window wall without furniture. I think a print armchair where the wood chair is would look great, angled into the room. And I'd get a colorful array of pillows - similar to what's on your couch - on the pew to coordinate with whatever other colors you incorporate.

The scale of the slipper chairs calls for a smaller table to my eye, with them placed a bit closer together.

@olychick I have thought about a sofa table behind the cream sofa, but we use that walkway all the time. I'm afraid with little ones, the lamps would get knocked off, and broke. I agree about a smaller table between the chairs, I think that would look great. I can't wait to try some of these different arrangements, and see how it looks!

I think a sofa under windows can absolutely be a room's focal point and be beautiful--think of it like a big window seat. Sometimes it's the best option in a room due to the layout. I personally love it.

@cache317 that is pretty! I think with pretty pillows, it will look really good. Another thing I'm considering is getting rid of the curtains, and just having the bamboo blinds.

Does anyone have suggestions on a coffee table style, and a table between the chairs? I love the bookshelf decoenthusiaste posted if that helps with style. Also throw pillow suggestions. Love the blue color of that sofa above.

I like the first, and fourth pillows the best.

I love the room cashet posted with the blue L shaped sofa - the difference in that room is that both sides of the sectional have a window adjacent to see/look out of....your room would have the sofa backed up to the window and while it might look ok from the rest of the room, when you are sitting on the sofa, all you would see is the wall with the pew on it instead of your beautiful windows. And I'll bet there is a fireplace or tv opposite the blue sectional, too.

So consider, not only how the couch will look against the window (it might be lovely) but what you'll see when you're seated. I'd much prefer to look out the windows than have them to my back, but maybe that's just me :-)

But if you do like that arrangement best, consider a large mirror on the pew wall, to reflect the view from the windows.

That bookcase comes in a larger version if you decide to put it on a wall by iteself.

It seems like the black sofa is the issue here. Would you be willing to use a slip cover on it or remove it? Can you then flip the other sofa with the chairs? This is what we recommend. You flip those, then add a big piece of art work to the blank wall. Also, and make sure to have a color scheme in mind for the room.

Moved stuff around, definitely think a bookcase where the loveseat is now, and not sure if I should move the clock, and do something else there since it can't be centerd with the chairs. The screen door, ladder, and maybe mirror will go.

I have a good idea, in order to get moving faster. why not remove now and work with what is left. That would mean removing the black couch the coffee table and the end table. I would remove the clock and the screen door too.

I would have one chair on each side of the couch or two across from the couch. you understand that if you have a yellow object whatever it may be you really need 3 things that contain that color?

lets see what can be redone. do you not want an area rug?
