Another Dip In Temps Next Week!
Comments (3)The National Weather Service is calling for highs into the lower 60s Monday-Wednesday up in Redding, Pat (low to mid-60s here around Sac). It may get into the 50s (lows into the lower 40s), but I can't imagine why the local news would predict highs in the 40s! I don't rely on my local weather, either. :D Brenda...See MoreAustin Area Temps Dipping Next Week
Comments (12)I wouldn't be so concerned if it wasn't so still and clear. I brought the rooting ones which were on the front walkway basking in the warm sun into the garage. They are in between the fridge and car so there should be some supplemental warmth without a mat. The ones in the ground are just going to have to tough it out. I covered up all the smalls with a large tarp to just keep cold air from settling on them. I'll check the temp at 5am and make the call about starting a fire in the fire pit. That has been my last resort in the past and makes about a 10 degree difference within about 30 feet of the pit....See MoreTemps dropping into the 40s at night. Cold protection options?
Comments (6)I had another thought too. Would trimming off the new flowers and buds divert energy to the existing fruit and maybe get them to grow and ripen a little faster? I'm planning on an experiment. We have 2 Cayennes with green fruit, 2 Jalapenos, and 2 "mystery hots". I was going to let one of each just keep going as best it can, and I was going to trim the flowers and new buds off the others and just watch 'em and see what happens. - Mark...See MoreFruits you prefer cold, room temp, or frozen
Comments (40)You can buy half of a watermelon here, but still that's more than I can eat at one time. When I do buy watermelon (which is rare), I always eat some of it at room temperature first, and that is when it tastes the best. The flavor of watermelon is somewhat subtle, and when it is chilled those subtleties are lost. A lot of fruit has fragrance that a lot of people miss. For instance, fresh passion fruit has an intense fragrance, which survives even when made into a sorbet, but passion fruit juice has none of this fragrance left in it. I had a passion vine in Venice that would produce 60 to 80 fruits a day, and so I had to buy a juicer to take advantage. Not much juice in a passion fruit, when when you have 60 at a time, it is significant. Since I could not drink it all at once, I made sorbet, and this kept very well in the freezer for several weeks, which was as long as it lasted. Pineapple has an intense fragrance when it is fresh, and I have grown pineapple just so that I can take better advantage of this. Still, the pineapples that I have grown are not as good as the ones that I have had in the tropics. I tend to eat mostly tropical fruit, with the exception of figs and dates....See Moreamylou321
