Need Your Help Curtain for Sliding Patio Door?

Sorry for the lousy photo I am providing. while it does have horrible lighting and color reference, I am really asking about how to hang curtains on this - the sliding patio door in my kitchen. It faces south and we have had vertical blinds on it which do pretty much fit the bill ( we rarely close them but want the option to do so to block out sun or for privacy--- both are very rare). I have always disliked the verticals, but they worked. Now after close to 30 years they are cracking and falling and just really looking SORRY and SAD.

I would very much love to get some curtains - perhaps grommets? for mostly decorative purposes but also to be able to close off. I am a bit puzzled as to where to hang them as there is an alcove where the blinds are.

Here is the lousy photo but I do think you can see what I am asking.

Honestly, it;s a very attractive kitchen but I have zeroed in on the this door. I need your help. what would you do? I can see extending just a tad beyond the alcove ?

You might want to consider a ceiling mounted drapery track. I would not want to put drapes in front of the alcove. I also have a southerly facing patio door, and I control the light with lined velvet drapes that I made to fit the space. Mine are hung with wooden rings that have clips, as I did not want to have pleated drapes - the velvet plus the lining do a sufficient job of block light, which otherwise makes a glare on my TV during the day. Since the drapes are not pleated, they are extremely easy to make. Pleated ones are easy also but use much more fabric and create much more bulk. Since you have limited space for the drapes to stack on the one side, it is better to have minimal bulk.

I am not sure I understand- are yours from the ceiling? Trying to visualize. I think I really do like the looks of curtains on clips/rings but I am so not handy that I am intimidated by that. I also thought it had to be with pleats. Yours sound lovely.

I think I really would like curtain of some sort on a rod.

jprobins: If I may be blunt, you're in denial. You are going to spend quite a bit of money for good quality doors in a hurricane zone. Make sure you don't need the darkened "turtle glass" which keeps your nighttime light pollution from confusing sea turtles to walk toward you instead of the moonlight over the sea. The codes are very strict regarding window/door installation in hurricane areas. You need a professional contractor, not your brother-in-law or a local handyman. WinDoor is the Cadillac of sliding doors. Amazing quality. I pushed a 4'x8' with one finger.

We have vertical blinds on our patio door too - nothing fancy, but they are not closed often. The door faces SE, and in the winter we love that sunshine streaming in! As others pointed out, we can adjust the angle of the blinds to let in light while blocking direct rays.

I would look at white plantation shutters for the windows and a Vertiglide on the slider since you use it every day. I would then either add a cornice over the Vertiglide or some drapery side panels. Now if you have young children I am going to change my Vertiglide recommendation to a vertical. I know no one like verticals but if you have sticky little hands, you want to be able to clean the blind easily! When they have grown to the point where you don't have to worry about that anymore, then you can move to a Vertiglide or something else. Mount either 1 or 2 curtain rods about 6" above the window (all the same height). Get curtains that go all the way to the floor and are twice as wide as the length of the rod. The rod should also be about 6" wider than the window and/or door. You can use multiple curtains to get the correct width. Personally I'd do one long rod if you can find one, and have 1+ curtain that rests in between door and window, as well as 1+ on each of the outsides.

The brackets are installed into the ceiling rather than the wall and the rod hangs from there. A track system is basically a traverse rod so the curtains can be pulled open and closed easily. You can also hang a regular rod from the ceiling with rings.

Pleats will be neater looking and they do actually stack well.

I just replaced my vertical binds on a patio door with a double rod, sheer curtain in the back and blackout curtain in the front; I don't have an alcove like you, just the door frame. I got grommets on both, but I am thinking I will try to find another sheer w/ a rod pocket or something because the blackout curtain catches on the tops of the sheer, and I have to hold the sheer in place when opening the blackout curtain.

My rod does sag a little because I couldn't use the middle support bracket, but it's not really noticeable. Fortunately the curtains are not very heavy; they are rather inexpensive ones I bought on walmart.com actually :), placeholders until I find something better. I would have hunted up a ceiling mount rod if I had room to fit it in the door frame, but I don't. Mine's wall mounted just like the blinds were.

I went with the sheer and blackout so we have light and enough privacy during the day but can close the blackout if it gets really hot and/or need more privacy and when we go home (this is at a vacation home).
