Need help covering sliding patio door.

I need light not heat control on my kitchen sliding patio door. We replaced the French door, that was leaking cold with a good Andersen slider 3 years ago when we remodeled the kitchen. It gives us so much more room. It has the sun low E glass so no heat comes in, but the morning sun is so bright, door faces east, I would like some light control. Don't need black out. Just cut down some light. It only has a valance now.

Call Andersen and double check with them that an applied film will not void their warranty. After that, call a local 3M film installer and look into a glare control film.

I have vertical blinds on my sliding glass door. They can be adjusted so many different ways to let in as much or as little light as you want. They open to one side so you can operate the sliding glass door if you want.

We will replace 2 sliding glass doors (72"x80") with metal frames, likely original to our 49-yr-old house, because they've fogged and one is hard to move. Our contractor recommends Viwinco and the distributor he sent us to seconded that and showed an S-Series unit (vinyl clad exterior & interior) with Northern Zone glass pkg. We also looked at Anderson Narrowline 200 Series. Is Anderson worth the additional cost? Online I read mixed reviews of Viwinco, all at least 5 years old, along with recommendations for Sunrise (no local dealer in NE Pennsylvania) and Okna. Okna is carried by big box stores but I don't know what model to look for. At our "advanced age," we don't know how long we'll remain in the house. What do you recommend?

Parma, I love your WT, so pretty! Kismet, do you sew? Or have you found a good site for ready mades? Or do you want to hire custom mades? I think I would cover the windows to either side of the slider with the same drapes IF those windows are quite close. But that might require a very special custom made rod and HUGE curtains. To get your drapes/curtains to clear your slider, you just have to mount the rod so it's several inches wider than your window, allowing room to pull the drapes clear back off the windows. Maybe there is room for drapes to gather up opened between your slider and the windows? Another choice is to use some type of blinds (Roman, Balloon, Austrian, etc) that pull down from the top. That could look very pretty. The windows could also be grouped all together with one valance, again if they're close. Hard to advise without seeing a picture. Can you post one?

Anderson rep was presenting the vinyl clad with engineering wood inside option. Not sure which specific line it is. She was from Renewal by Anderson. Any particular reasons why you suggest against Pella/Alside - is it the low-end /vinyl part or brands in general? Would the wood on inside of elevate not be susceptible to rot? also eventually i plan to replace windows and in my budget would very likely be vinyl, will they look really out of place with a wood (painted white) pine patio door? (i dont have windows in that same room, but would be in adjacent/other rooms. for reference i replaced interior doors last year with menards 6 panel wood painted white). lastly, any thoughts on Marvin essential series (vinyl), likely to be cheaper as well. sorry for all the follow-ups, there are so many options and not having enough expertise/experience/feedback on who to trust, getting very confusing. glad we have this site with experts like you guys contributing.

OK, you like vertical blinds. There are so many types. Do you have vinyl, faux wood or fabric?

We installed cellular honeycomb vertical blinds on a 6 foot slider a few years ago and have been very happy. We did an inside mount and they do take some window space for the stacking but not too intrusive. It's nice that they can open left or right.

We have vertical blinds on our patio door too - nothing fancy, but they are not closed often. The door faces SE, and in the winter we love that sunshine streaming in! As others pointed out, we can adjust the angle of the blinds to let in light while blocking direct rays.
