Sliding Patio Door Help Needed

We have a beach house (Texas coast; on a canal; humid; salt air; hot; hurricane zone) which has 1970's vintage, aluminum sliding doors that really need to be replaced. I want hurricane glass in the doors, but they are otherwise standard 6 ft widths. I have looked at Neuma doors, but was shocked at the price and I've read a lot of bad reviews. They did seem very nice in the showroom, though. I do want to replace them with very good, nice, solid, well sealing, high end doors, but I don't want to go crazy. $4100 each was a little high for me. Any comments on Neuma would be appreciated. Would also be very appreciative of any recommendations of other brands/models. Thanks so much.

Vinyl does well in salt environments as does well built aluminum. Simonton makes a nice stormbreaker series in vinyl.

We will replace 2 sliding glass doors (72"x80") with metal frames, likely original to our 49-yr-old house, because they've fogged and one is hard to move. Our contractor recommends Viwinco and the distributor he sent us to seconded that and showed an S-Series unit (vinyl clad exterior & interior) with Northern Zone glass pkg. We also looked at Anderson Narrowline 200 Series. Is Anderson worth the additional cost? Online I read mixed reviews of Viwinco, all at least 5 years old, along with recommendations for Sunrise (no local dealer in NE Pennsylvania) and Okna. Okna is carried by big box stores but I don't know what model to look for. At our "advanced age," we don't know how long we'll remain in the house. What do you recommend?

I have a patio door with a single sidelight the same width as one of the patio doors. It looks like a 3 panel setup but only two of the doors open. I think they are 36" wide but would have to double check. So a bit wider that your existing opening. Looks similar to the door in the picture but i have two doors that open.

We have vertical blinds on our patio door too - nothing fancy, but they are not closed often. The door faces SE, and in the winter we love that sunshine streaming in! As others pointed out, we can adjust the angle of the blinds to let in light while blocking direct rays.

Draw in a to scale dining room table with chairs. I think that will make you want to move the patio door as you are asking about so you can more easily get out the doors and people can be at the table and with the doors still accessible. While I love the idea of hidden entry to your pantry, same comment as above. It seems a table and chairs will block entry. You can still make a "hidden door" from the hallway. I imagine pantry goods being accessed at all times for snacks or when having people over. So you do not want the person sitting at the table to have to move to access the pantry. Maybe my sense of scale is off and there is enough space. Try drawing in your table with the chairs to get a more clear sense of whether the table and chairs are in the way or not. :)

If I may be blunt, you're in denial. You are going to spend quite a bit of money for good quality doors in a hurricane zone. Make sure you don't need the darkened "turtle glass" which keeps your nighttime light pollution from confusing sea turtles to walk toward you instead of the moonlight over the sea.

The codes are very strict regarding window/door installation in hurricane areas. You need a professional contractor, not your brother-in-law or a local handyman.

WinDoor is the Cadillac of sliding doors. Amazing quality. I pushed a 4'x8' with one finger.

So are you saying that the price I am being quoted for the Neuma slider was a good price? What is pricing like for the WinDoor sliders?

P.S.--This is Texas, not Florida. Regs are a bit of a pain, but nothing remotely like FL.

I am not familiar with Newma so I can't say. I charged $1,500.00 to install a 6' slider and took an absolute pounding. Made about $9.00 an hour. Inspection made me reinforce the opening with rebar and concrete. I won't bid door installations without speaking to inspection first and I won't speak to inspection until I get paid at least a little.

Those Florida installs are a definitely exhaustive and the inspections are definitely a PITB.

The inspections are only slightly better here in Texas.

Neuma makes an ok door, not great, not bad. Certainly not the “high end” door you said you’re wanting.

Was the $4100.00 door impact rated with laminated glass?

It was simply stated to be "hurricane glass". There was only one option. I presume that means impact rated. Neuma just happens to be what these folks sell. What are other good brands to research and (please, please) indicative prices? It seems almost impossible to get prices from the manufacturers. I am happy to pay for the install.

I would take that to be impact rated then, and as such it is a reasonable price. I always recommend getting the final inspection done prior to paying the balance in full, to protect yourself. I don’t offer service in that area any more, as the process has become too cumbersome, so I’m not real up-to-date on products that meet your requirements, sorry.

Windows on Washington mentioned Simonton. Additionally, you might check with BMC as they are dealers for both Andersen and Marvin, as well as several other brands that might offer impact rated products.
