Lighting Design Dilemma Kitchens

need help with style of kitchen island lights

We are building a new house and I am struggling with light fixtures. Our home has a bit of a modern/industrial flair to it.

plan is to use either matte black or chrome for the lights. Our kitchen has white shaker cabinets, white or light grayish countertops. light gray brick backsplash. Wood floors. Our appliances are black stainless. The cabinet door handles are chrome and the plumbing fixtures are chrome. white farm sink. We have a 6' island so I need 2 pendants over it. Should i use chrome or matte black? the kitchen is open to the dining room so I am thinking the island pendants and whatever light I put over the dining table need to coordinate (?). Thank you! this is the best picture I could find that has the combination of materials we are using!

A great lighting designer once told me good lighting is never seen. I am fond of the "Form Follows Function" school of thought. Having said that I think you should at the tasks you will be doing at the island first. Make sure you have the proper lighting for those tasks then worry about the aesthetics.

The most important thing is to know your options. Big box stores typically have limited options and low quality. Find a good lighting shop with qualified designers to advise you properly. Last but not least make sure to remain consistent in the color of light throughout each space. 3000K is the color I use the most. Uneven light color can really make a room look bad and not well thought out.

So the black hutch, custom table (legs) and chairs are in the DR. No black in the kitchen (with the exception of accessories later). Since the areas are adjacent, I really would steer clear of a black island. It's going to be too much black. With the cinnamon cabinets, cherry floor and stained woodwork throughout house, I would go with a painted island of another color - cream or an accent color you are drawn towards. I found that same rope light in a chandelier style with 3- 40 watt bulbs. https://www.shadesoflight.com/products/rope-net-glass-sphere-chandelier?via=57e1335569702d78ae0002c5%2C58d068de6170701a0b004f2f Given size of my island would you think the chandelier would be large enough/throw enough light? Or would I be better off with two of the smaller ones (1 40 watt bulb each)? Thanks!

You're welcome. :) A few people asked about the ones in this pic but no one answered. I don't know, but I did a google of glass ball pendants, and came up with this. Here's just one place I found some. But clearly there are many. Take your time to find the best one and price!

@jessicabaskerville, Given the extra ceiling height, your open area plan, and overall island size I suggest using 3 pendants of the size you're currently considering. See attached image for approximate layout. Keep the height so anyone standing at the island can see through to other spaces un-obstructed by the base of the pendants. The island pendants should be on a separate dimmer for better overall control of kitchen lighting. Also, be careful of your bulb choice since bare bulbs will produce some glare (another reason to use a separate dimmer). Please post pics when your project is completed.
